Mixed Cobblers emotions for Wilder in Alloa

Cobblers boss Chris Wilder was disappointed his side did not beat Alloa Athletic in their friendly match but was pleased to get some vital minutes into players and with the tactical experiment that was undertaken.

Town drew 1-1 with the Wasps at Recreation Park in what is the only fixture of the club’s pre-season training camp in Scotland.

Marc Richards was on target for Northampton, but perhaps should have had a second after a header was ruled out for offside in what was a marginal decision.

“We’re a touch disappointed that we didn’t see the game out but it’s a good workout for us,” said Wilder, who used a wing-backs system for the game and a three-man forward line.

“It’s a different surface to what we play on and maybe they were a bit more used to playing on that than we were.

“A lot of players got 90 minutes under their belts and a few got 70 or 75 minutes.

“We worked on a different shape, we haven’t done a lot of work on that one and we threw it on the players tonight.

“Their goal was a bit .but it was a decent finish and you have to work hard to get a result.

“You have to expect that, the roar when they scored was what you’d get in a league game and we understand that.”

The game was played on Alloa’s artificial pitch and with the home side opting for a possession-based strategy, the contest was an unusual one for Wilder’s players.

“They passed the ball really well and looked to keep it so it was hard work for us,” he said.

“It’s not the sort of game we’ll get week in, week out in league two but it was a different sort of test for us.

“We really had to work hard physically in terms of shutting the ball down and pressing.

“We need to be a bit tidier with our passing and our decision-making but that will happen as we go through pre-season.”
