Mallinder is the new McGeechan, says Phil Pask
Former Northampton Saints player and England physio Phil Pask has likened Jim Mallinder to 'Lion king' Ian McGeechan.
The wily Scot has been on seven British Lions tours as a player and a coach, and was Saints boss for six years from 1993 to 1999.
McGeechan, who also coached Scotland to a Grand Slam in 1990, took Saints out of the second division as Mallinder did and built a team to challenge for top honours, with the side he left behind going on to win the Heineken Cup in 2000.
Mallinder has similarly transformed Saints on the pitch, lifting them out of National League One, winning the European Challenge Cup and now fighting on three fronts.
Pask, who is now on the Saints board as a non-executive director, said: "Jim reminds me of Geech (McGeechan). He is very hands-on like Geech was, he is out on the training pitches with his tracksuit and a whistle in his hand. And like Geech, he is a visionary."
