Maddox is the star as Bones get a vital win

Robbie Maddox and Fazel Koriya were on target as Rothwell Town secured three priceless points in the BGB Southern League Division One Midlands relegation battle.

In a game that was poor for long periods, the Bones did enough when it mattered. And that's all that matters at this stage of the season.

That either side would do anything at all looked highly unlikely at half-time.

The first half was so bad, there was a tangible sigh of relief from the sparse crowd when the referee brought it to a close.

Rothwell were unrecognisable from the team that had battled so well in defeat at leaders Leamington at the weekend.

The midfield in particular appeared to have little idea of what style or formation they should be playing while Leighton Town just went for the lump it and hope approach.

So it came as something of a bolt from the blue when Maddox gave them a 56th-minute lead with a superb strike from the edge of the box after Kevin Byrne had chested the ball back to him.

That was the cue for the game to open up. But, while Rothwell were competing better, with confidence fragile in the home defence there was always chance of an equaliser.

And it came in suitably scrappy manner on 76 minutes when a cross wasn't cleared and Enzo Silvestri scrambled the ball home.

At this point, many might have expected Rothwell to fold.

Instead, Maddox completed a fine performance with his second five minutes from time after a David Glass cross.

And with Leighton forced to throw men forward, Rothwell hit them with a classic bit of route one in injury-time as Koriya beat Reds keeper Lee Clarke to a long clearance and rolled the ball into an empty net.
