Lack of end product or quality costs Bones
Plenty of huff and puff but a noticeable lack of quality was what cost Rothwell Town in this Division One Midlands game.
Chesham United, who still have ideas about the play-offs, rested one
or two of their brighter sparks – including top scorer Danny Burnell – but still had enough to hold on to the lead given to them by Gary Sippetts' fine finish on 28 minutes.
However, they were never able to relax – the Bones' industrious work- rate that was typified by Robbie Maddox made sure of that.
And while there was only ever one goal in it, Rothwell were always in with a chance of getting something from the game.
That they didn't was not down to a lack of hard work. It was simply down to a lack of end product.
Maddox was everywhere, appearing on both flanks, up front and busy at
the back too.
But you got the feeling he was doing the work of 10 men or at least three more in midfield where Mybebe Medine and Michael Boyle-Chong showed some good touches but too often gave it away after doing the hard graft.
However, the major problem was up front where Simon Underwood was a defender playing as an emergency striker and Shaun Goodall was a striker who looked like a defender.
Anonymous at times, he either lost the ball immediately or held on too long and then lost it.
At no point did he provide a target for crosses or hold the ball up to allow support to get forward.
As a result, Chesham were able to keep the Bones at arm's length – although Boyle-Chong and Maddox brought good saves out of Generals keeper Michael Underwood while Boyle-Chong and Fazel Koriya saw efforts cleared off the line.
But they couldn't break through and almost conceded a second but Darrell Cox had a goal ruled out for offside and then hit the side-netting.
