Snow joke as trio win coin toss in KO Classic
Sports News
Luck was on the side of Silverstone, Cold Ashby and Priors Hall in the opening round of the Men’s Mail on Sunday KO Classic as the three county clubs scraped through to the next stage.
A coin toss was required to decide whether they would stay in the annual team event after snow prevented them from completing their first round ties before the fixture deadline.
Silverstone guessed correctly against Kingsthorpe, Cold Ashby got the better of Daventry, while Priors Hall gained the verdict from Orton Meadows.
Fortune didn’t favour Stoke Albany however as they missed out to Kilworth Springs after their match was called off at the last moment.
The second round draw sees Silverstone face a trip to fellow county outfit Farthingstone, Cold Ashby travel to Rugby, while Priors Hall are also away at Pavenham.
Brampton Heath’s reward for their convincing victory against Northampton is a trip to Kettering, Overstone host Rushden, while Hellidon Lakes and Northants County both have home advantage.
In the ladies competition, Overstone and Northants County face away ties in round two as they take on Wellingborough and Kettering respectively.
Whittlebury Park host Silverstone, Northampton travel to Kenilworth while last year’s Cecil Leitch Trophy winners Oundle host Peterborough Milton in another all-Northants clash.
European Tour
Northamptonshire pro Gary Boyd will have much to ponder after missing his second consecutive cut on the European Tour at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic last week.
The Cherwell Edge man hit just four fairways and had 35 putts in an opening round of four-over-par 76 to give himself a tough task of qualifying for the weekend. Although his driving improved on the second day, the 25-year-old was unable to give himself enough birdies chances as he bagged another 76.
Boyd, who has made the cut just three times in his last 10 events stretching back to last September, will not compete again on the main European Tour until next month at the earliest.
MGU
Northants County is the only local course to have a major competition on the 2012 men’s Midlands Golf Union Order of Merit as they hold the County Cup on August 4.
Oundle Golf Club, meanwhile, have received confirmation from the MGU that they will be the host course for the 2012 Midlands Boys Championships to be played on July 5.
Northampton
Almost 50 talented youngsters braved the cold conditions to take part in a couple of competitions on the day of the Northampton Junior AGM.
On a day when Jenny Baughan handed over the junior captaincy to Luke Hawkins and Harriott McCulley took on the role of vice captain, the club held separate nine-hole and five-hole events.
Charlie Salter, Lewis Bartlett and Libby Miles (34.1) grabbed the top prize over the longer distance as they edged ahead of runners-up Morgan Perts, Corey Perts and Andrew Watson (34.25).
Harvey Oliver, Jackson Harris and Oliver Weston clinched the five-hole tournament, before all the players enjoyed a meal and then picked up their prizes from last year’s competitions.
With former county first teamer Andy Myers now part of the club’s PGA coaching team, they have increased their junior membership to 96.
For more details about the programme of golf lessons starting early next month, contact the club shop on 01604 245155.
