Herridge leads way as Brampton beat freeze
Sports News
Brampton Heath’s men braved the frozen conditions to beat Northampton 4-1 in the first round of the Mail on Sunday Team Classic on Saturday.
Nick Herridge was a 5&3 winner, Bob Frost triumphed 4&3, Jack Brown clinched his point on the closing hole while Ben Jones claimed the notable scalp of county first team player Lewis White 3&2.
After being forced to switch their home tie to the away venue, Collingtree Park proved no match for Northants County as they picked up just half a point.
Steve Reynolds and Simon Richmond were both 6&5 winners for County, Malcolm Watkins secured a 5&3 home victory, while Danny Roberts overcame away skipper Dave Morris with two holes to spare.
Andy Hopkinson was unable to complete the whitewash as his match with Collingtree’s Brendon Moss ended all square.
Overstone Park held on to defeat Wellingborough 3-2 in their home tie after the visiting team produced a battling comeback.
Despite facing Wellingborough’s plus-two handicapper Kyson Lloyd, who is also an Overstone member and holds the course record, Dan Nixson gave the hosts the perfect start with a thumping win.
County champion Mark Davis, who is a former Overstone member, faired marginally better than Lloyd in game two but still lost to Anthony White when his opponent chipped in for a net two on the 17th hole.
Wellingborough’s Ryan Evans, who is competing in the Portuguese Amateur Championships next week, recorded a big win over Taylor Sargeant, before Mike Gilbrook levelled the match score by beating Ryan McAllister 3&1.
Although Stewart Robertson took his game the distance he was unable to complete the Wellingborough comeback however as a long birdie putt for victory on the 18th stayed above ground against Andy Harrison.
Farthingstone have reached round two but Stoke Albany’s trip to Kibworth was called off due to the snow, even though a late request was made by the Leicestershire club to switch the tie to the away course.
Both clubs have asked for an extension, however the most likely outcome is that the tie will be decided by a coin toss at the tournament office.
The same applies for the ties between Silverstone and Kingsthorpe, Priors Hall versus Orton Meadows and Cold Ashby’s home clash with Daventry, which were all postponed due to the bad weather.

Robin Adams is enjoying playing golf during the off-season after bagging two hole-in-ones during the winter at the club.
After taking up the game just over a year ago, Adams wasted no time in carding his first ever ace when he found the bottom of the cup in November at the 211-yard 13th hole with his driver.
The 12-handicapper repeated the trick whilst playing with friends last month when a well-struck eight iron at the 117-yard ninth hole found its target.
Adams admitted: “I didn’t see the first hole-in-one go in because it was a driver into the wind and there were shadows all over the green.
“I saw it bounce three times and then it disappeared, so I didn’t know if it had gone through the back. But when I got to the green I tiptoed over to the hole and there it was.
“Neither hole-in-one was in a competition, which is probably just as well because there was hardly anyone in the clubhouse so it didn’t cost me too much!”
