Dallas leads Ireland to Four Nations triumph

Collingtree Park’s Ian Dallas skippered an Irish team to victory in the inaugural Four Nations Golf Challenge final at The Oxfordshire GC.

In an event run by Northampton’s Roger Brady, the former county champion joined up with Fraser Thomson to record a 4&2 success in the semis against Scotland as Ireland reached the final via a play-off.

Cherwell Edge’s Sean Lapper and Stephen King were unable to take England into the final as they lost on the first extra hole of a play-off after their semi-final with the Welsh also ended 3-3.

Dallas and Thomson avoided a second disappointment for county golfers the next day as they anchored the Ireland team to a 4-2 final victory over Wales by clinching the decisive point on the 15th hole.

After winning a series of knockout ties to earn the chance to represent his country and then having the pleasure of lifting the Four Nations Trophy, Dallas was understandably delighted.

He said: “On behalf of all the competitors, I wish to thank the Four Nations Golf Challenge for such a fantastic event. We didn’t want for anything and we all felt like Ryder Cup players.

“I cannot believe that as club golfers we have all received an ‘International Cap’ and to have captained my nation to victory will be a memory for ever.”

Consistency was the key to success in the Stanhope Cup as Lee England fired two consecutive rounds of net 66 to clinch a seven shot victory.

With first round leaders Peter Stockwin and Graham Truby dropping out of contention after an opening net 63 apiece, Ian Hedges came through to grab the runners-up prize.

The 12-handicapper compiled a second round best of net 65 to beat Jerry Wixon and Lewis White (139) on countback.

Adam Costain picked up the Frank Wild Cup after beating fellow 16-handicapper by one shot on the back of a net 66. Richard John was runner-up by a stroke from Mervyn Robertson and Alan Broadbent.

The Dawland Cup went to Pete Moffat on countback from Steve Tyrrell and two other players, after beating the course by four holes.

Overstone Park

Countback was needed in divisions one and two in the October Medal as Peter Gasson (net 68) beat Billy Beard in the top category and Tony Middlebrook overcame Stephen Moore in the next section.

In-form Stephen Roche, who bagged a hole-in-one in a club comp last month, won the third division thanks to a net 66. Tim Buffery was four shots adrift in the runners-up spot.

A birdie two on the fourth hole helped Gina Evans (73) claim her second club success this season as she beat Helen Roy by two strokes in the Ladies October Medal.

Cherwell Edge

Six consecutive pars at the end of his round proved decisive for James McMahon in the monthly stableford as he smashed a winning tally of 44 points.

Nick Darby (43) clinched the third division from Gary Ayres, while Sean Lapper (39) beat Phil Beesley by one in the top section.
