County duo are Taylor made for Curtis Cup
Sports News
Two teenagers with county connections have been included in the preliminary Great Britain and Ireland 12-player squad for the Curtis Cup against USA at Nairn GC, Scotland on June 8-10.
Kettering’s Charley Hull and Northants County member Lauren Taylor, who are both England internationals, will be hoping to impress in a three-day team trial over the championship links on March 23-25.
Seventeen-year-old Taylor is one of the leading matchplay golfers in the country after winning the 2011 British Ladies Championship before going on to lift the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year.
With the team being announced on March 27, although Hull’s better results have generally come in strokeplay events, the world number eight has developed a strong reputation on the opposite side of the Atlantic this month.
The 15-year-old was unable to complete her three-week trip to Florida with another victory however as she lost in the quarter-finals to former Curtis Cup player Meghan Stasi Jones-Doherty Challenge Cup at Doral.
Last year’s winner, who also finished first and third in her other Blossom Tour appearances this month, made a superb start as she beat American Sam Stewart with five holes to spare in round one.
Hull, who rose to a career high sixth in the world rankings a fortnight ago, was even more impressive in round two as she covered the first 16 holes in six-under-par whilst defeating Emily Gimpel.
The plus-four handicapper came unstuck in the last eight however as Stasi, who is a two-time winner of the US Mid-Amateur, used all her experience to record a 3&2 success before going on to win the final.
Northants County
The January Mid-week Stableford witnessed some outstanding rounds as both the two divisions were claimed with very high scores.
Roger Brady grabbed 45 points to clinch the top section by two from John Mahood and Roger Clarke.
In the other category, Bill Smith also finished a single point ahead of the field as he bagged 44 points to squeeze in front John Bennett and Eddie Hill.
Staverton
Birdies on the 13th, 16th and 17th holes helped Darren Taylor beat Paul Creaney on countback in the January Stableford after both men carded 39 points. Allen Halliday was third on 38.
John Glover was the only player to match his handicap in the 15th week of the Winter Series as he carded 18 points over the back nine to finish two ahead of Gordon Russell and Paul D Taylor.
Kingsthorpe
Anton Clarke and Kevin Purkis have maintained their advantage at the top of Group F as the Winter League approaches the knockout stages.
Mark Bazeley and Kris Spence are the pair to beat in Group C, while Max Armstrong and Harry Barrett, Andy Lay and Mark Lineham, and Kyle Knight and Mark Todkill head their respective sections.
Cherwell Edge
Some incredible scores were recorded in the January Sunday Stableford and the fourth round of the Seniors Winter League as the members made the most of the shorter course.
Despite carding three early bogeys in the Stableford, James Coleman Jnr, who plays off 10, completed the remaining dozen holes in level par to finish three points clear of the field with a total of 43 points.
