Collingtree duo set for Dubai grand final
Two different pairs of Collingtree Park members are looking forward to a trip to Dubai next month after reaching the Grand Final of the UK Matchplay Championships.
Andy Castell and Andy Billson won the south regional men’s pairs title in glorious weather conditions at Marriott St. Pierre in South Wales to booked their place on May 7-14.
The two Andys, who qualified for the regional betterball final after winning several knockout matches, finished in style as a birdie two on the 18th hole earned them first prize with 44 points.
Not to be outdone by their Collingtree colleagues, Dave Morris and Tracy Morris grabbed the runners-up spot in the mixed qualifier.
The husband and wife pairing, who finished third in the three-day Grand Final at The Els Club last year, carded 39 points to secure a second successive trip to the middle east.
EWGA Grand Medal Final
Hannah Mulliner has qualified for the 2011 Volvo EWGA Grand Medal Final after finishing fourth in the midlands south regional medal final with a net 75 at Caversham Heath GC.
Chasing a top 10 spot for the June final at Droitwich GC, the five-handicapper was in devastating form over the closing stretch as she carded a birdie and an eagle at the 14th and 15th holes.
Whittlebury
Four birdies were on Alistair Heslop’s scorecard in the April medal as the seven-handicapper triumphed with a round of net 67. Robert Maxwell was second in the top category on 68.
Divisions Two and Three were both won with a score of net 68 as Simon Gates and Richard Pullen took the plaudits by one from Richard Allenby and Roy Marriott respectively.
Countback was required in the ladies medal as Ada Parr squeezed ahead of Gillian Long after both shot net 72.
Rayner Edwards was successful in the Junior medal as a round of net 69 secured a one shot victory ahead of Charlie Salter and Rob Scott.
Cold Ashby
Adam Smith was four shots clear of the field in the April mid-week medal as a magnificent round of net 65 secured the honours.
The seven-handicapper carded a birdie on the 13th hole before following it up with an eagle two at the next hole to finish ahead of runner-up John Moon, with Bob Clayton in third on 71.
One point was the margin of victory for Derek Jones in the seniors stableford as a tally of 38 points nudged him clear of Terry Malone and Gerry McInerney. Isobel Robertson (74) won the ladies medal.
Northampton
Stewart Moffat and Richard White led the qualifiers for the Tartan Trophy as the pair carded a winning foursomes round of net 68.
With the top 31 pairs going through to the knockout stages alongside defending champions Brad Jarvis and Keith Heard, second place went to John Blake and Brian McEwan on 68.5.
Arthur Cuthbert and Ian Elliott warmed up for a busy season by shooting the equal best score of 40 points in the seniors team practice comp.
Overstone Park
John White produced a remarkable run of 16 consecutive pars in a round of net 65 to clinch the April medal on countback from past club captain Mike McGrath, who carded a couple of birdies on short holes.
An eagle two on the par four 10th hole was the highlight for David Bonham in the mid-week medal as he grabbed the plaudits by one stroke.
Fellow 11-handicapper Phil Gardiner (66) was runner-up, while Neil Ashby (68) and Darren Jenkins (69) took the second and third sections respectively.
A birdie two on the infamous 17th hole helped high-handicapper Terry Johnson win the seniors mid-week medal on countback from Norwood Whittle.
Sue Kingston (net 72) lifted the Ladies Spring Trophy by two from Tracy Morton, who won the recent ladies medal. Judith Prosser (75) won the second section by a single stroke.
Brampton Heath
Mark Law was the boss in the April medal as a net 68 secured a one shot victory from runner-up Ryan Botterill, third-placed Alec Francis, Sean Collins and Paul Bull.
Five shots was the margin of victory in the Ladies April medal as Gillian Sparrow (net 74) grabbed the honours ahead of Vicky Lafferty.
Ladies Cecil Leitch
Whittlebury Park came agonisingly close to recording an excellent away victory at Northampton before losing a play-off on the first extra hole. Northampton also recorded a 4-3 home win against Kettering.
Daventry also have two home victories under their belts as they recorded a 5-2 win against Kettering before defeating Elton Furze by a single point.
