Adams was signed on Friday on a three-year deal, the player making the move from Bury on a free transfer after he was told by Shakers boss David Flitcroft that his services were no longer required, despite still having two years of his Gigg Lane contract to run.

An attacking midfielder, Adams is 28 and has played made close to 400 senior appearances, scoring 15 goals and creating many more.

He was a key man in Bury’s promotion-winning team this season, is a player that Wilder has long admired, and the Town boss believes he will be a hit at Sixfields.

“We are trying to implement a way of playing at the top of the pitch, a style, which we feel is good on the eye and entertaining and has got us results, especially after Christmas,” said the Cobblers manager.

“Nicky fits into the way we play. He is energetic, forward-thinking, forward-running and has ability and talent. Hopefully he is going to be a good signing for us.

“Maybe there were a few raised eyebrows when Bury made him surplus to requirements, and we feel we have worked very hard to sell him the club as he would have had a few options.

“We feel he suits what we are trying to do, whether that’s without the ball and having the energy to go and press, or with the ball and getting on it and making things happen.

“We are delighted to have signed him.

“He is a great age for us to build. We are still in that process of developing a team, and Nicky ticks all of the boxes that we want in players coming to this football club.”

Asked if he was surprised that Adams was made available by Bury, Wilder said: “Managers have to make decisions, and the manager at Bury thought that they were going to go in a different direction and Nicky wasn’t going to be involved.

“We know a lot about the player, we have seen him play on numerous occasions, and he has played a league above for the majority of his career.

“He is another player that has been involved in promotions and been part of a winning side, and we feel that’s important as well.

“It’s not an unbelievable criteria, because there are only so many teams that can get promoted, but he knows how to win a game of football, and he has an ambition to do well.”
