Westwood waiting on defensive duo
ASHLEY WESTWOOD is set to find out whether defensive duo Jerel Ifil and Djoumin Sangare will be available for Kettering Town’s home clash with AFC Telford United on Saturday.
It is understood that the two players put in a 14-day notice on their contracts having not been paid for the past two months but that those notices were then withdrawn.
Midfielder Steve Meechan has already left the crisis-stricken Poppies under the same circumstances and, after last night’s Blue Square Bet Premier match against Forest Green Rovers fell victim to the cold snap, caretaker-manager Westwood will now be seeking clarification on the status of the two centre-halves.
“They were both available for last night’s game and I believe the 14-day notices were up after that,” he said. “I have since been made aware that the notices were withdrawn but I will need to check on that.
“I have been taking things a game at a time and I was only focused on who was available for last night. Obviously we are now planning for Saturday and that will be a situation that needs addressing.”
The weekend clash is already in doubt with the weather forecast predicting more sub-zero temperatures for the remainder of this week and the Nene Park pitch already frozen despite being covered.
Westwood admits it is a ‘disappointing’ situation from an on-field and off-field prospective.
“I am frustrated because this cold weather has not come at an ideal time,” he added.
“We are on the back of two home wins and it would have been great to have a couple more this week. Hopefully there is a chance for Saturday but it doesn’t look good. It’s a shame because we haven’t had the chance to build on the momentum we had picked up.
“But it’s also a bad thing for the club. I am not sure how much they would have pulled in from last night but either way it is finances the club needs.
“We won’t be the only ones. There will be a lot of clubs who will struggle during this cold weather.”
The home game with Forest Green has been re-arranged for Tuesday, February 21 with a 7.45pm kick-off.
