Westwood’s pledge
ASHLEY WESTOOD insists it is a ‘certainty’ that Kettering Town will travel to Barrow for Saturday’s Blue Square Bet Premier clash.
The Poppies were thrown into yet further turmoil at the end of last week as non-payments to Northamptonshire Police resulted in them withdrawing their policing for the weekend’s postponed home clash with AFC Telford United, meaning the game would have been played behind closed doors if it had been on.
The club remains in desperate financial trouble with debts continuing to grow while the players have not been paid for two months.
The Kettering Town (Poppies) Supporters Trust described the club as ‘all but dead’ in the wake of the police issue as chairman Imraan Ladak remains in place, despite the continuing problems.
However, when asked whether the squad would head to Cumbria this weekend, caretaker-manager Westwood said: “We will definitely be going to Barrow.
“I would have thought that’s a certainty.
“There has been no talk amongst the players about not playing matches.
“Hopefully the weather will improve this week and we can do some serious work to ensure we are fully prepared for the game.
“Clearly, there is a serious situation to sort out at the club but it’s out of our hands.
“We will focus on the job that is in front of us.”
Westwood is also hopeful that defenders Djoumin Sangare and Jerel Ifil will be part of the squad that travels to Barrow on Saturday after he confirmed both players had withdrawn 14-day notices they had put in to get out of their contracts.
“We have had it confirmed that those were withdrawn,” Westwood added. “They will be available for the game at the weekend.
“You never know what might happen and teams could still come in for them. But I obviously hope they will be with us.
“They have performed extremely well for the club recently and especially in the games we have had since I have been here.
“Hopefully that will continue.”
