Town keeper wins first cap
Cobblers goalkeeper Frank Fielding won his first under-21 cap as he came off the bench in England's 2-0 friendly win over the Czech Republic at Bramall Lane last night.
Fielding, on loan at Cobblers from Blackburn Rovers, started the game on the bench but was called into action when Joe Lewis was injured.
Peterborough keeper Lewis was taken off on a stretcher clutching his leg in the 30th minute, giving Fielding the chance to show what he can do.
England were already ahead at this stage through Tottenham striker Fraizer Campbell, and scored a second through Aston Villa's Craig Gardner.
Meanwhile, Cobblers boss Stuart Gray will today step up his search for a new defender on loan after it was confirmed Karl Hawley has gone back to Preston.
But the Town boss says it will be difficult to afford the wages of a player from the Premier League as he looks to reinforce his squad following the 5-2 defeat to Leeds on Monday night.
Hawley has gone back to parent club Preston North End, freeing up some of the playing budget, although it will be used on wages with the transfer window still closed.
Skipper Chris Doig is likely to be sidelined for at least the next month and is not in the manager's plans for the near future. And after the successful debut of Kyle Walker, who the club recruited on loan from Sheffield United, the plan is to once again raid that market to enhance the defence.
"I'll definitely be looking to bring someone in on loan before we play at Hereford on Saturday," said Gray, who has been linked with a move for Gabor Gyepes, who was sold to Cardiff City in August but has struggled to cement a place in the Bluebirds' first team.
The home game against Colchester United, which was originally postponed last month due to the weather, will now take place at Sixfields a week on Saturday.
