Satisfied Edinburgh salutes '˜best point yet' after Cobblers hold Shrimpers

After winning three successive home matches, Northampton continued to make strides under Edinburgh on Saturday afternoon when they held the play-off chasing Shrimpers to a 2-2 draw.

“I’ve just said to the players that I think that’s the best point we’ve gained since I’ve took charge of the club,” said Edinburgh afterwards.

“To leave here with a point after a fantastic performance is great. Players put their body on the line and we had to ride our luck at times but we really defended well second-half and it’s a fantastic point.”

The Cobblers twice fell behind, first through Jermaine McGlashan and then Simon Cox, but on both occasions they hit back thanks to Marc Richards’ fine finish and John-Joe O’Toole’s fifth goal in four games.

An action-packed first-half then made way for a more scrappy second but despite Southend dominating, Northampton defended well and held on for an excellent point.

Edinburgh added: “Their second goal was unfortunate for us because it was a miss-hit shot that landed to their striker in the box but we went into half-time level and I thought that was just rewards for how good we were first-half, especially with the ball.

“In my opinion we shaded it first-half and then defended better in the second, but perhaps got turned over in possession too much and we had to defend very well.

“It shows our far we’ve come in such a short space of time and credit to the players because they’re working tirelessly on the training ground.

“Of late no one has left Roots Hall with any points and Southend have been in very, very good form so it’s a fantastic point for us.”
