Potter says he will relish attacking freedom with the Cobblers

A player who knows manager Chris Wilder very well, having played under him at Oxford United for just under five years, Potter is looking forward to being able to express himself again at Sixfields.

The 26-year-old admits he struggled for consistency in his final 12 months at the Kassam Stadium, before making the switch to AFC Wimbledon in the January transfer window.

The tactics at the Cherry Red Records Stadium were pretty rigid, and not surprisingly centred around the strengths of Adebayo Akinfenwa, which Potter admits didn’t suit his style of play.

One of the reasons Wilder has brought Potter to the Cobblers is that he believes the player will fit into the team’s more fluid attacking style.

A style that sees the frontmen, and in particular the wide players, regularly switching positions and operating from all areas of the pitch.

That is something Potter believes he is capable of doing, and something he is looking forward to.

“I used to always play on the right when I was younger, while the season just gone I played mainly on the left,” said Potter, who began his career at Peterborough United, making two substitute appearances before being released.

“In the gaffer’s last season at Oxford, he played me in behind the striker and that worked really well, so hopefully I can play right, left or in behind if that’s what’s needed.

“A bit of freedom is something that I enjoy.

“At Wimbledon they have Adebayo Akinfenwa up top and they like wingers that are just going to get it and cross it, and maybe that’s not me.

“I am looking forward to playing in the system the gaffer plays here, and I think it will really suit me.”

After spending six years at Oxford, Potter is looking forward to a fresh start, and is looking forward to entertaining the Cobblers supporters.

“I am a player who likes to get on the ball and try to make things happen,” said Potter, who spent the 2008-09 season on loan at Northampton’s county neighbours Kettering Town.

“Sometimes it comes off, and sometimes it doesn’t, but that is the same for any attacking player.

“Hopefully I will excite the fans, and get them off their seats a bit.”
