UCL round-up: Long Buckby no match for flying Cuckoos

Wes Emery tested home keeper Aaron Butcher early on with a free kick but the save of the match came from opposite number James Broadbent who went full length to turn away Dan Cotton’s deflected free-kick.

Nick Davey for Yaxley and Antar Phipps-Norton for Buckby shot over before the Cuckoos took a 31st-minute lead when Davey’s flick was converted by Andy Coleman.

Yaxley doubled their lead three minutes before the break when Davey was brought down from behind by Elliott Herbert and Cotton sent Broadbent the wrong way from the spot.

The Cuckoos continued to hold the upper hand in the second half and wrapped up the win after 78 minutes, substitute Dan Bucciero’s through ball picking out Cotton who fired into the roof of the net from the edge of the box.

Broadbent’s fine tip over kept Ollie Gale off the scoresheet before a misunderstanding in the home defence saw Yaxley’s Ricky Hailstone loop a header over Butcher to gift the Bucks a consolation in the fourth minute of time added on.

The opening game of the division one campaign ended with honours even between Peterborough Sports and Bugbrooke at Lincoln Road.

Sports started brightly with Matt Simpson having a header blocked and Ali Nyang just off target with a free kick.

Bugbrooke’s first effort of note was a Matt Johnson shot on the turn which was just wide.

The Badgers took a 25th-minute lead. Ryan Nash fed Brad Janes on the right and his ball in behind the defence was calmly finished by Ryan Ansell.

A mazy run from Dan Clements ended with the winger putting a fierce shot just over the bar and Gary Gibbs headed wide when well placed from a Dan Fountain free-kick.

Sports levelled five minutes into the second half, Fountain’s flag kick from the right met by a powerful Simpson header.

Brad Janes had a fiercely struck shot for the Badgers blocked and then played Callum Beech clear only to miscue his shot as keeper Luke McShane advanced.

Visiting keeper Olly Garafalo kept his side on terms with a fine tip over from Fountain’s free-kick before Janes glanced a header wide from a late set-piece.
