‘People don’t want to leave us’ – Aidy
AIDY BOOTHROYD managed to secure the signature of his top January transfer target this week but was left frustrated in attempts to trim his Sixfields squad.
As well as the logistical problems a big group presents – the manager recently spoke of a practice match that featured two teams of 11 players and ‘three or four’ sat in the stands twiddling their thumbs – there are also financial concerns.
Boothroyd was pleased to secure departures of defender Ashley Corker and goalkeeper Paul Walker on deadline day.
But there could have been more, as the manager explains: “People don’t seem to want to leave this club.
“I don’t know why that is, whether it’s too nice or whether it’s a nice place to live or whatever it is, they don’t seem to want to leave.
“For me, if you’re not playing football you’re a footballer, it’s best they move on.
“If the manager doesn’t think you’re going to play in the team then best to move on.
“In Paul’s case he’s a little bit different to Ashley. Ashley was never going to play regularly in the team whereas Paul is a young goalkeeper and he could be one who comes back and bites me.
“Decisions have got to be made and it’s about now.
“He’s not going to play on Saturdays, Chris Weale is so I have to make those decisions.”
As well as adding Clarke Carlisle to his Sixfields squad, Boothroyd also completed terms for two up-and-coming players, with striker Lewis Wilson coming in from United Counties League football and goalkeeper Neal Kitson coming in from American ‘soccer’.
“The two boys that have been contracts are short-term ones,” he said.
“An American goalkeeper, Neal Kitson, who has come in on trial and done really well.
“I think when a boy comes in on trial you have to make snap decisions in a short space of time, in this case two weeks and I just felt he deserved an opportunity to prolong his stay and prove himself to get a longer contract.
“Lewis Wilson is from a local club, Newport Pagnell, doing very well in the non-league. He came in on trial and did really well.
“It was on the recommendation of one of our scouts. That’s what we have: we’ve got good people working for the club.
“They don’t get any money for it , they do it for good will and they help us out.
“We rely on that sort of thing because we can’t afford an extensive scouting system so what we’ve got is people I know, people Andy King knows and people Tim Flowers knows, Sean Parrish and everyone throughout the club.
“We’ve got to follow up on all these leads for us to make sure we don’t miss out on anybody. I’ve got high hopes for Lewis and those two are more development players than anything else.”

Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 09:09 AMI've no idea. I must have misspelt something. Totally agree with both of the first two comments but that's the trouble with modern day football. The higher you go up the leagues, the more contracts become worth as much as the old Deutschmark. I'm still trying to work out who you are Thespionkoppite. I didn't stand on the Spion Kop until the last home game in Division One which was against Sunderland (not Fulham as some people think) in 1966.

Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 06:18 PMI suppose if I had upped sticks and moved here on the say-so of a previously appointed manager and put my signature on a long contract, I would not take too kindly to being asked to push off!! That's why contracts exist and both sides have a responsibility to honour the contract.
