Northampton Town: Speed is a vital commodity for Town boss Boothroyd

AIDY BOOTHROYD will continue to look to add pace to his forward line after deals to sign a pair of new strikers were put on the backburner.

The Cobblers were in for Wolves hit man Ashley Hemmings, who has signed for Plymouth Argyle on loan, and Kidderminster Harriers forward Jamille Matt, for whose signature the race has heated up considerably since three rejected bids were made for him in December.

Boothroyd had brought in Akwasi Asante on loan from Birmingham City to bolster his options in the forward line.

And on Hemmings, he said: “He’s a player that I’ve liked for a little while and seen him for their reserves a couple of times and he decided to stay at Plymouth and that’s fine.

“I like to have a lot of pace in the side because it means we can break on the counter-attacks but I also want some steel and some solidity down the spine of the team.

“Chris Weale made a difference to us and we need a bit more of that experience and steel down the middle of the team.”

Town were keen on Matt, who has scored 10 goals in 21 games for the Harriers, but who is now a wanted man by several teams.

“A lot of clubs are interested and I would imagine there is a long queue of clubs looking to take him,” Boothroyd said.

“That’s where we’re at – we’ve got to get in quick, get the job done and get back out again. Somebody, somewhere has leaked that Jamille Matt is a good player and so they’re all going to look at him because we said we’re looking at him.”

Boothroyd also wants to trim his squad and with that in mind, has concluded deals to allow Austrian duo Lumbardh Salihu and Marin Pozgain to leave the club.

“I’ve spoken to a couple of lads that we want to come to some sort of settlement with so they can move on with their careers and the two Austrian boys have left the building,” he said.

“Right from the start, I’ve said we’ve got too many players. We had an 11 v 11 yesterday on the main pitch and there’s three or four players just watching.”

Meanwhile, American goalkeeper Neal Kitson last night announced on Twitter that he has joined the Cobblers.

The Rochester Rhinos player, 25, said: “Have just signed with Northampton Town FC, pending international clearance, until the end of the season.”

Just in case you are wondering, Kitson plays in the third tier of US pro soccer - MLS being the top tier.
