Northampton Town: Sanchez ‘Barnet will definitely finish above Cobblers in league two’
Northampton Town Football Club v Barnet at Sixfields. John Johnson.
LAWRIE SANCHEZ believes Barnet will finish above the Cobblers this season after watching his side win at Sixfields on Saturday.
And the Bees boss confirmed after the match that he had a game plan to capitalise on Town’s weakness for losing games having taken the lead in them.
Under manager Aidy Boothroyd, Northampton have led in every single game they have played with the exception of the loss at Oxford United before Christmas.
But they have won only once – at Morecambe a fortnight ago – and Sanchez, whose side ran out 2-1 winners at the weekend, was well aware of that statistic and its connotations.
“Northampton have got a phenomenal record under Aidy Boothroyd of being in front in games, I think they’ve done it in their last six games and it’s eight in total,” he said. “And they’ve ended up losing them, so we knew that and we knew it wasn’t going to be over at 1-0.
“The goal we gave away was disappointing, we got away with it at the first corner, the second one was identical and they scored.
“We said before the game that we couldn’t get involved in playing the same sort of game as them, we had to get it down and play our game.
“In the second half we got on the ball better, passed the ball better and we scored our first goal from the best move of the match.”
Town took the lead through Adebayo Akinfenwa’s ninth goal of the campaign but failed to build on it, and even though they enjoyed long spells of possession in the visitors’ half towards the end of the game, they forced keeper Dean Brill into very few saves. They remain rock bottom in league two as a result, and Sanchez feels that with the gap between the two clubs now eight points, Barnet will finish above Northampton in the table.
“They threw the kitchen sink at us at the end but we defended manfully, and the back four got their heads on everything and threw their bodies at everything,” he said.
“This is a step up from the win at Accrington because this was a six-point game and it means Northampton are now eight points below us.
“That’s three games they’ve got to win on us over the second half of the season and I’d like to think that won’t happen so that’s one team that will finish below us.”

Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 08:44 PMBlimey....can you imagine what the internet would have been like in the 60's following our slide for the "Prem" to "Div 4" I would love to see the suicide stats for the late 60's as we tumbled from grace.... If I was Aidy B....I'd have this headline printed off, framed and pinned up in the dressing room.... Motivation to be at least two from bottom...

Monday, January 23, 2012 at 04:29 PMIf the worst were to happen then I fear we would spend many a long year in the Blue Square Premier. David Cardoza says that he is still commited to the Cobblers but I wonder how long he would stick around after ploughing in over £7m since he arrived. We could end up in the same mess as Kettering or R & D - God forbid.

Monday, January 23, 2012 at 01:22 PMSanchez is probably right - but then again, the way we are playing, EVERY side in our division will finish above us! All we can hope is that Aidy Boothroyd can a) get the backing for some quality new players, and quickly, (although, who wants to sign for a club in our position?) and b) that he can squeeze something extra out of the dross we already have. Failing that, we're finished... have a look at the Conference with all its ex-league clubs, and ask yourself - what makes you think we'd get back out of there? A few seasons ago we were in League 1, but if you remember our slide then into relegation we could see it coming as a certainty and this time once again it is clear to see we are on the brink of being beyond recovery. Only 19 games left to perform a Houdini. Pray for miracles!!!
