Northampton Town: No immediate return for defender Doig
CHRIS DOIG will continue to hold talks with the Cobblers about a potential return to Sixfields, but the defender will not feature for the first team tomorrow even if he does sign.
The Scotsman, who has spent the past week training with the club with whom he spent four years between 2005 and 2009, could be registered in time for tomorrow’s trip to Torquay.
But manager Aidy Boothroyd says it is unlikely centre-back Doig would instantly command a place in the starting line-up.
“There are lots of things to consider because he hasn’t played for a while and when you bring a player back you have to be careful you don’t look at things through rose-tinted spectacles,” he said. “The nostalgia takes over but you’ve got to look at how things are now and he’s done very well in the past couple of days.
“We need to have a talk to him but I don’t think he’d be able to go into the team anyway, he needs some more work first.”
Boothroyd has been pleased with Doig’s work so far, and is also a fan of the character of a man who captained the club in his final season.
“He looks like he’s lost a bit of weight from what I remember so obviously living abroad has done him the world of good,” he said. “He’s come in and done very well.
“We need warriors, we need leaders and we’re a couple or three players short of where I would like us to be. Chris has got a good reputation and he’s also got a high calibre in terms of his experience of playing matches.”

Friday, January 27, 2012 at 10:32 AMAidy says we need warriors and leaders, well you get both from Chris Doig. I made the same comment when he came to sixfields with Wycombe. In that game every ball that was launched into the wycombe half was won by Chris, and when he was last with us he was a really good Captain who lead by example. Of course Aidy Boothroyd needs to be sure before making a commitment to paper, but I believe that doigy is just what we need, and then John Johnson can get back on the right side of defence.
