Northampton Town: New signing Carlisle can’t wait to get started for Cobblers
CLARKE CARLISLE wants to bring ‘fire and desire’ to the Cobblers’ battle against the drop, starting against Macclesfield Town tomorrow.
The on-loan Burnley defender was the club’s prize acquisition during the January transfer window and is expected to go straight into Aidy Boothroyd’s side for the visit of the Silkmen.
Town remain rooted to the foot of npower League Two, but Carlisle is hoping to bring not just some much-needed leadership and experience to the ranks but also some heart-on-sleeve passion.
“It’s a completely different challenge to anything I’ve face in my career so far, coming to a club that’s fighting for it’s Football League survival,” he said.
“After such a long career in the game, I wholly appreciate what professional football has done for me.
“Hopefully I can add that fire and desire to stay in the League to what Aidy’s trying to produce with the squad here and all the lads will be giving their all to make sure Northampton stay in the League.”
Carlisle admits he is not too familiar with the nature of the squad at Sixfields and the problems that have been plaguing them throughout the current campaign, although he is likely to have been well briefed on that front by Boothroyd.
He does, however, recognise the blend of youth and experience within the ranks and is confident the players have enough quality about them to soon rectify their perilous position.
“I know very little about the lads personally but obviously within my role (at the PFA) I try to know as much as I can about everyone as I possibly can,” he said.
“I’m getting old and a little bit senile but I’m trying to remember names and I’m aware of some of the ability there is within the squad.
“I’ve come up against some of the older players like Shane (Higgs) and Jason (Crowe) during my career and I’m aware of the quality there is in some of the younger lads.
“I’m really excited about this blend of youth and experience because I’ve seen this synergy between that work before and I want to make sure I’m involved in it working again.”
The frost covers at Sixfields have been in place since Monday and the club are confident the game will go ahead despite the sub-zero temperatures in Northampton this week.

Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 05:40 AMThe title says "Carlisle can't wait" but I think he might have to, temperature was -8 on the way to work this morning. Suppose I'll have to settle in and make do with the Rugby.
