Northampton Town: Johnson ‘Cobblers good enough to stay up’
GARY JOHNSON believes he has left Cobblers manager Aidy Boothroyd with enough high-quality players to keep the club in the Football League this season.
Johnson, who left Sixfields in November and since returned to management at Yeovil Town, claims his former club will soon turn their form around when an unspecified number of key players have returned.
Town are currently rock bottom in npower League Two and many people attribute this struggle to the work of a manager who won just seven of his 34 games in charge.
Chairman David Cardoza described the decision to appoint Johnson following the controversial sacking of Northampton legend Ian Sampson as ‘a huge mistake’ in a recent online web chat with supporters.
But Johnson, who is facing a relegation battle of his own at Huish Park with the Glovers in the bottom four of league one, said: “I think they’ll get out of trouble because when they get their big guns back from injury they will be stronger.
“Aidy (Boothroyd) asked me about the job. He asked me about the club and the chairman and I said if he wanted to get back into the game it’s a decent club, a good chairman and, although it looks grim, there’s some decent people and some decent players there - and I still believe that.”
Johnson (pictured) also commented on his time in the Sixfields hot seat, and dropped a hint that he was not happy with the budget handed to him, despite it being considerably higher than the one under which Sampson was operating.
“When I was at Northampton I felt they had a lot of players that needed to be moved out and we needed to bring a lot of players in,” he said.
“There wasn’t a massive budget and we couldn’t move out the ones who were already there, so they were taking up a third of the budget. It was very difficult to get a competitive team, but every manager since has found it difficult there.”
Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that former Cobblers director of football John Deehan has taken on a similar role at Plymouth Argyle.
The Pilgrims are just outside of a relegation zone that contains Town and Dagenham & Redbridge, who were beaten at Torquay on Tuesday night.

Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 03:28 PMJohnson has lost the plot totally, keep out of NTFC affairs, when he joined we still had outside hopes of a play off charge, he was so good, instead we narowly missed the drop, what a baffoon! His after match ramblings on radio Northampton were ridiculous and removed from reality, totally meaningless. He had a good budget to work with, new team, new pitch, only one person to blame............

Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 12:13 PMI for one, hope to see clueless return to sixfields one day, so that we could all thank him for a job well done. After all, in his mind, he saved us from relegation last year. His comments must be tongue in cheek surely? Unless he employs Alastair Campbell.

Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 11:46 AMHow dare he even have the nerve to comment, the man who blamed the managers before for their "poor signings" who then went on to sign twenty odd players OF HIS OWN CHOICE and have even worse results...!!! He now has the nerve to blame his "low budget"....... Heaven help us, he was a total waste of space while here, and still he spouts on his rubbish. Nothing against Yeovil as a club but I hope and pray they are relegated. The man, in my opinion is an idiot and a poor excuse of a manager who has done our club so much damage. How can a manager create such havoc, and then walk away with a "settlement" swiftly followed by another job.........!!!!! Need I say more.... Goes to prove, in this life, you rarely get what you deserve...!!!!

Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 11:01 AMHe's still at it! Once we get our big guns back from injury? Higgs and Nana are both out for the season, Nana is hardly a big gun. What a twonk! I don't know why I am even reading what he has to say - I found the man to be vague, ambiguous, and whilst pointing the finger at all and sundry, felt he was totally blameless. The relief I felt when Johnson finally left was tantamount to the passing of a month long bout of constipation!!
