Northampton Town: Door not closed on any player
AIDY BOOTHROYD insists there is a road back to the starting line-up for the large number of members of the Cobblers squad who currently find themselves frozen out.
Town played Mansfield in a behind-closed-doors practice match earlier this week to maintain match fitness of those men on the sidelines, and also for them to try to force their way into the manager’s thoughts.
Leading goalscorer Adebayo Akinfenwa has found himself as a substitute in recent weeks, while marquee summer signings such as Jake Robinson and Arron Davies did not even make the bench for the weekend defeat to Southend United.
It illustrates the size of the squad at Sixfields that the list does not end there – Tadhg Purcell, Paul Turnbull, Byron Webster, Nathaniel Wedderburn, Ashley Corker and Michael Built have also found first-team football hard to come by in Boothroyd’s reshaped squad.
But while the plan is to seek pastures new for several of those players, some could still force their way into the starting line-up.
“We’ve got a lot of players who aren’t involved at the moment but that’s life,” said Boothroyd, whose team play host to Barnet at Sixfields on Saturday.
“I can only name a starting 11 and five substitutes and so far I believe those players are justifying their selection.
“Until I think otherwise then I won’t change that and I think we need to add to the group of players I’ve got here.
“I’m delighted that I’m working somewhere where we’re all on the same page in terms of that and we’re all working hard to get players out and to get players in.
“I had a look at a few of the lads in a game on Monday and it wasn’t a punishment, it was for the guys that are not in the team to try to get themselves into it.
“I’m flexible and I’ll change it if I can think somebody can come in and change the team for the better.”

Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 09:06 PMThe question has to be why Did DC and the board ( board? I couldn't even name another director!) when "Delboy was signing all these players, no doubt scouted by his brother the Plonker, not step in and say NO. One of the worst things about it all is both GJ and DC went on record to state that they wanted a quality tight knit squad of 18.

Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 01:01 PMSorry Marvo, the reason Southend mullered us on Saturday was because we defended like a bunch of pussies.

Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 12:53 PMThe reason Southend won and we lost on Saturday was because they had a bench which could make a difference, we did not. Arron Davies may not have set the world alight (far from it) since his arrival in the summer but he has talent, has scored 4 goals in his 16 league appearances and he would have been a far better option on the bench than Ryan Gilligan!
