Northampton Town: Defender on trial at Sixfields
CHRIS DOIG could be the fourth Cobblers player to be reunited with his former club after it was confirmed the defender will spend the week on trial at Sixfields.
The Scottish centre-back played in a reserve team game against Colchester United that ended in a 1-1 draw earlier this week.
And manager Aidy Boothroyd will assess Doig, who was part of the team that won promotion from league two under Colin Calderwood in 2006, as he weighs up his defensive options in the final week of the transfer window.
Doig made two appearances for Aldershot Town earlier this month after signing a month-to-month contract with the Hampshire club. Prior to that, he was with Pelita Jaya of Indonesia after spending two years with Australian side Central Coast Mariners following his Sixfields exit.
After originally featuring on loan with the Cobblers in 2003, the Scotsman was one of four players signed on the same day by Calderwood in the summer of 2005, and formed a solid partnership with Sean Dyche and Luke Chambers to help the team to promotion.
Should he re-sign, he would follow in the footsteps of Adebayo Akinfenwa, Ashley Westwood and Jason Crowe in returning to the club after spells elsewhere. It would also enhance Boothroyd’s options at centre-back, with Byron Webster currently providing the only senior back-up to first-choice duo Ben Tozer and Kelvin Langmead.
John Johnson has been used at various times as a centre-back but is now doing a job as a holding midfielder, and the club could do with some added depth in a department, which has been problematic all season.
Boothroyd last night watched Torquay United, who play host to his side at Plainmoor on Saturday, beat Dagenham & Redbridge 1-0, a result that means the Cobblers remain bottom, but level on points with the Daggers.

Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 07:03 PMDoigy is a lovely bloke and it was sad when he got too slow and had to leave, so, sentiment to one side, why the heck is he being considered again? Has he suddenly got a pair of jet-powered boots? Pretty please, get some new players with speed and ability, otherwise we are going down, down, down among the dead men.

Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 06:56 PMI think the honest answer has to be that neither Doig nor Webster are what we need at the back. Webster is no better than what we have in this position and Doig, old batler he may be, but is too slow and slowness at the centre of our defence is one reason why we are where we are.

Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 02:44 PMI'd settle for Steve Howard any day but take the point about Chris Doig. I liked him as a player but towards the end of his time with us he looked very slow and easily turned. Several seasons have since passed and nobody gets any quicker. What's the deal with Webster? By all accounts he's fit and ready to go. If you had a choice of Doig or Webster who would you go for? There must be some underlying issue with Webster. Hmmmm!

Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 12:22 PMYet another unemployed ex player that we open the door to. It speaks volumes that Aldershot have released him after one month Crowe, Westwood, Bayo, Doig, maybe Steve Howard, no pace amongst any of them. None of them suit ABs style of fast pressing football. I hope for better before the window closes.
