Northampton Town: Cardoza ‘No crisis at Cobblers’

A press conference with David Cardoza and Aidy Boothroyd, as Aidy Boothroyd is announced as the new manager of Northampton Town Football Club.

DAVID CARDOZA has confirmed he will back Cobblers boss Aidy Boothroyd in the current transfer window and make funds available to sign more players.

The Town chairman has increased the playing budget to allow Boothroyd to bring in three players this month, and that number could be added to despite the club being on track to record a financial loss this season.

The club made a rare profit last season but will not do so this time around, with Cardoza ready to give his manager everything he needs to stave off the threat of relegation for the Football League’s bottom-placed club.

“We’ve spent far too much this season but we’re bottom of the league and we’ve got to make sure that we’re good enough to stay up,” said Cardoza, who told BBC’s Late Kick-off programme last night that he has spent £7m since his arrival at Sixfields in December 2002, and increased the wage bill this season by £350,000.

“Personally I think the squad of players we’ve got under Aidy are good enough but we’ve got to make sure and we’ve got to use January to do that.

“We’ve already signed a goalkeeper and a couple of players on loan and we’re willing to make some more signings.

“We have to do that. The only thing that matters at this moment in time is being good enough to stay up.”

This has been an expensive campaign for the Cobblers, with the club financing a number of high-profile signings by Gary Johnson and then footing the bill when he left Sixfields.

Cardoza has also had to increase the budget to bring in loanees Ben Harding, Blair Adams and Akwasi Asante, as well as goalkeeper Shane Higgs on a permanent deal.

Town are set to bring in another keeper to replace Higgs, who will miss the rest of the season with an Achilles injury, and could also bring in two more outfield players.

Some will need to leave – the likes of Arron Davies, Jake Robinson and Byron Webster were not even in the matchday 16 on Saturday – and as well as a financial implication that is also having an impact on Boothroyd’s coaching.

“The wage bill is higher than it should be but it’s not astronomically high,” he said. “It is not a concern to us financially.

“We’ve got a lot more players than we should have, and that is not practical for the manager in terms of keeping everyone happy.

“We’re still putting in considerable amounts and we’ve put quite a bit in this year. We made a profit last season but we won’t this year because we backed Gary to get us promotion.

“It won’t be a significant loss because the club is very well run and it will remain to be that way.

“We bought players and upped the wage bill, with both permanent and loan players, and that costs a lot of money. Loan players don’t come in for nothing, that’s a bit of a misconception, they actually cost a lot of money.”

I wish Mr Cardoza and Mr Boothroyd some luck in the next few weeks to remove the Cobblers from the bottom of Div 2 and stave off non-league football for Northampton once out of league football its a long haul to get back in as we can see from the well known names that litter the lower league`s
