Northampton Town: Burnley defender is the key signing on deadline day

CLARKE CARLISLE became the latest addition to the Cobblers cause on a reasonably busy transfer deadline day at Sixfields.

The defender, who was recently on loan at Preston North End, has signed a loan deal until the end of the season from npower Championship club Burnley.

Midfielder Ben Harding, who was already with Town on a loan deal from Wycombe Wanderers, made his move permanent, and two players – full-back Ashley Corker and second-year professional goalkeeper Paul Walker – had their deals terminated.

Also arriving were goalkeeper Neal Kitson, who comes in from the USL Professional Division in the United States, and striker Lewis Wilson from UCL side Newport Pagnell Town.

The recruitment of Carlisle, who played under manager Aidy Boothroyd in the duo’s time together at Watford six years ago, is being seen as something of a coup in league two circles, for both the experience and leadership qualities he brings to the squad and his on-pitch attributes.

“Clarke is a player I have worked with before,” said Boothroyd. “He is a leader in every sense of the word. He has won three promotions with three different clubs, he has played in the Premier League and he is a winner.

“He is a very strong character on and off the pitch, and he is just the sort of player we need to help us get the club back to where we believe we should be.”

Writing on Twitter, Carlisle said: “Hello to #NTFC and all their fans! It’s a pleasure to join up with Aidy again and I hope I can contribute to the battle for survival.”

Northampton were linked with several players during yesterday’s deadline day, with the names of Millwall winger Chris Hackett and Cardiff City striker Jon Parkin also in the frame.

Gabor Gyepes, who was a huge success as a player at Sixfields three years ago, also stirred some interest among the supporters after he was released by the Bluebirds, but his representatives confirmed to the Chron that he would not be looking to rejoin his old club at this stage.

Of the other two new players arriving, Boothroyd said: “Neal has come over from the States to prove himself. He comes highly recommended and he has done very well on trial.”

On the subject of Wilson, Boothroyd added, “One of our scouts, Simon Brown, picked up him playing for Newport Pagnell and he came in on trial.

“He is one for the future, but he will have a chance to impress between now and the end of the season. He has a lot of pace and has enormous potential.”

He was a contestant on Countdown not so long ago, he,s been bought in by Aids Boothroyd so he can work out for him how many snookers are going to be needed to for the Cobblers to avoid relegation.

Just listening to this guy in his latest interview on "Cobblers Player" and you have to say he sounds nothing like your bog standard footballer. Intelligent, articulate, knowledgable, I kept waiting for "you know like", or "over the moon" but nothing was forthcoming. I'd say a definate manager in the making, though he may be clever enough to avoid that role like the plague. A welcome signing and a welcome change.
