Northampton Town: Boss Boothroyd frustrated by 1-0 defeat at Torquay

Cobblers latest news

AIDY BOOTHROYD labelled his Cobblers side ‘too soft’ as they slipped to a third straight defeat with a loss at Torquay United.

The Gulls went into the game as the division’s form side and completed a fifth win on the spin courtesy of Mark Ellis’ header 15 minutes from time.

As a result, Town remain rock bottom of npower League Two and have now won only once in their past 18 league and cup outings.

They were the better side in the first half and appeared to be heading for a point before centre-back Ellis swooped to head home at a corner, to the fury of boss Boothroyd.

“Torquay are a top-six side because they are consistent, they dig in and keep clean sheets,” he said. “They can be battered but still win games.

“We’re too soft but we’ll change that.

“I’ll address that and make sure we get out of the situation we’re in.

“I’m annoyed about it (losing the game) because we’d done so well, to come down here, stop them playing and create chances.

“The game plan had worked and we’d had a real good go at them.

“Then you find yourself having that second of indecision against someone who really wants to go and win a header and score.”

Boothroyd handed a second debut to returning midfielder Luke Guttridge following his return to Sixfields on Friday, and he did not disappoint, although he was substituted off as a precautionary measure after feeling some discomfort in his hamstring.

There was also a recall for centre-half Byron Webster, who made his first appearance since September.

“Having him (Guttridge) makes a difference to us,” he said.

“He’s noisy, he’s lively and he’s got plenty to say on and off the pitch.

“When I found out he was available we went and did it. He wants to play for our club and he will certainly be part of the future that we’re trying to build.

“I felt we needed to swap it around (in defence) because you can’t keep making the same mistakes over and over and expect to get results. We’re always trying to bring in better players. Chris Weale and Luke are those players but they will take some time to settle in.”

RE:PATCOBB2 - Yeah, 'What a load of rubbish' and 'You're not fit to wear the shirt' are two great ways to support your team through thick and thin. More like through thick and thicker eh?

So, Clark Carlisle, Chris Hackett and possibly Dele Adebola - surely that is as good as we could hope for given our precarious position? Hopefully Blackpool have gone away and we can hang on to Jacobs too.

Marvo. I think that was the point Steve Rodhouse was making on the previous article. No manager (with certain exceptions - Johnson included) should be judged for at least eighteen months. With an overloaded, below quality squad Boothroyd has hardly any room to manoeuvre and may be having to bring in players short term that he probably wouldn't have otherwise. Had he come to the club with the funding that Johnson had then I agree he could be held accountable if we dropped out of the league. He didn't and therefore I don't think any blame should be placed at his door. If we are unsuccessful next season (whatever the league) with his players then I would have to agree with your comments.

You're right Tony, apparently only Boothroyd applied for the job!

As long as we remember who got us into this mess. A certain Mr Johnson who completely ripped any quality and grittiness out of the squad. Anyone following him was on to a loser and Boothroyd has to be applauded for taking the task on.

Clarke Carlisle has signed and we are lining up a big old bloke up front and a speedy winger. Turned Blackpool's bid down for Jacobs.

If we do not already, I think we will know the answer by 11pm tonight. If no real quality is brought in and we hear the annual limp statement that the loan transfer window re-opens in a week's time I think we will know our fate is sealed.

Very much with you on that, PATTCOBB2. We are drifting into obscurity with nothing positive being done.

I'm worried about the sense of DENIAL that everyone has, from the chairman, to the manager, the players and strangely and unforgivably amongst us the fans. For instance Last week after the inept defeat against Barnet I actually witnessed some fans clapping them off. Not once this season have I heard "WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH" which clearly it has been or "YOU'RE NOT FIT TO WEAR THE SHIRT" which some of the overpaid wasters definitely are! This apathy seems to have crept in. Face facts of relegation people... if relegated we will not be seen on the Football League show, we will not even be seen on Anglia goals because thje sole rights for "that" league rest with Premier sports. That "league" hardly gets covered in any Sunday paper, We will have to qualify for the FA Cup (yes qualify) and probably worse than all that we will have to pay matchday prices of at least £NINETEEN for the privilege of Barrow, Forest Green, Tamworth etc. The players and so far inadequate managers need telling, they need shaking out of their " oh we lost again - never mind I'll pick up my grossly unearned wages, get on twitter, go to Nandos, mess about on FIFA2012 until the next defeat" attitude! Urge you fellow Cobblers fans to fully support them give it everything from the stand try and shout them to victory - but if they don't perform, if they let us down again, tell them, tell them til their ears hurt make it ring in their ears that this club (our club) doesn't accept they way they've been so far. Tell them we don't accept the going through the motions, we don't accept all the lame interviews and the soundbites drummed up through the frankly lazy and ultra-complient local press. These poor gutless mollycoddled lambs that have been pulling on that famous claret shirt over the past 18 months have insulted us, let us down. it is now time for them to pay us back by PUTTING IN PERFORMANCES THAT ARE WORTHY OF THE SHIRT THAT THEY WEAR.

Look on the bright side. The Cobblers will not be moving to Milton Keynes.

It is easy to be defeatist, but there seems to be a more positive approach on the pitch, and don't forget that Southend and Torquay are doing very well. The results are not always kind in such circumstances. The real test will be whether points can be picked up against Macclesfield and other teams further down the league. If not, the defeatism is right. The ridiculous comparisons of AB with Terry Fenwick are just crazy.

Forget any sort of decent football next season. Aidy is doing his best but Northamptoinshire will have no sport to talk of
