Northampton Town: Boss Aidy targeting two more signings
Cobblers latest news
AIDY BOOTHROYD says he needs two more players to complete his Cobblers squad after ‘hitting the post’ a couple of times on transfer deadline day.
The Town boss sealed deals for four players on Tuesday night, with Burnley defender Clarke Carlisle the big-name addition.
Carlisle moved on loan until the end of the season and joined Ben Harding, Neal Kitson and Lewis Wilson in signing on at Sixfields.
Boothroyd isn’t finished there, though, and he is on the look out for more new recruits as he aims to steer bottom-of-the-table Cobblers to survival in npower League Two.
“What we needed, we got,” said Boothroyd. “We hit the post on a couple, but you have to accept that on deadline day.
“It’s certainly the biggest period I’ve ever known in a January but surgery was needed and we’re still working on doing some other things.”
When asked how many players he needed before he was happy with his squad, Boothroyd replied: “Two. (At the) front, middle and back probably.”
The permanent capture of midfielder Harding, who had been on loan at Cobblers from Wycombe, frees up another space in the squad for a loanee.
Clubs are only allowed five on their books, but Town now have four and Boothroyd is ready to take advantage of the loan market as well as sounding out players who have been released.
Boothroyd said: “I came very close (to getting more players in). In some instances some players were either going to be permanents or loans and there was a lot of to-ing and fro-ing to see whether they were going to leave their clubs or they were going to be loans for us because they had issues they needed to resolve with their clubs.
“In the end that comes down to something you can’t control and you’ve just got to put it on the backburner and wait for it when it may come up again.
“There will be a brand new set of players available now because of who’s not gone.
“I’m expecting all the circulars this week, we’ll have one as well and then we’ll just see what’s available and what we can go and get.”
But one player Boothroyd is unlikely to make a move for is former Cobblers centre-back Gabor Gyepes, who was released by npower Championship side Cardiff City this week.
“Not unless I want a team of centre-halves, no,” said the Town boss, when asked about the possbility of signing the Hungarian.
“I know Gyepes very well because he was at Wolves when I was at Watford so I know all about him, but it never came into the equation.”
Yesterday’s cold weather meant the Cobblers trained at the Goals Soccer Centre at Abbeyfield School in Mereway.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 02:57 PMSo too was a young Rodney Marsh. Steve Earle got a hat-trick for Fulham if I remember correctly. Bobby Brown did the same for us earlier in the season when we stuffed them 4-1 at Craven Cottage. The sad thing about that season was taking too long to adjust to the top flight. Based on just the last 30 games we accrued enough points to have finished nearly half way up the table.

Monday, February 6, 2012 at 06:29 PMI too was at the Fulham game, we were winning 2-1 at half-time and Johnny Haynes was in the Fulham side. Was also at the Sunderland game which we won 2-1.

Monday, February 6, 2012 at 02:48 PMNot in those days. The penultimate game against Fulham I managed to get in by the skin of my teeth at the Kop end before they shut the turnstiles. Thousands were still in Abington Avenue.

Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 11:22 AMAn afterthought. It's a shame that most people forget the game in 1966 against Manchester United when we played them off the pitch. They resorted to all manner of underhand tactics including Denis Law claiming a goal (not allowed) for doing a Maradona. We were cheated that day and only got a point in a 1-1 draw. Happy days.

Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 11:15 AMGood morning Marvo. I think everything has been covered properly here with the exception of the pitch unfortunately. My first game was in 1958 against Millwall I think. The Cobblers won something like 7-2 and Tommy Fowler was playing. Of course at a young age I thought it was going to be like that every week. If only. I'll stand corrected on some of that if wrong as I am working from memory only. I'm afraid I also have to disagree with your opinions on this particular article, with the exception of your view of a certain Mr Johnson. I think there isn't much dispute about that. Have a good one. You could always go down the Saints this afternoon. Here comes another debate.

Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 05:25 AMLLB in law you say? That's a coincidence, Roger watches LA Law! Anyway, nice to have you on board spionkoppite, your name brought back many happy memories. For my very first game as a small boy I stood on spionkop against Liverpool in 1996. Hooked ever since. I stood in that odd shaped bit at the very top, do you remember it? I also was behind the goal at that end when George Best scored his 6 goals, there's a famous picture from that day with goalkeeper Kim Book lying on the floor after being dumped there by Best as he scored, I can be seen in the crowd. Perhaps not the happiest day but certainly a great memory.

Friday, February 3, 2012 at 09:20 PMHa ha ha. I love it. Thespionkoppite was obviously sticking up for you because of the stick you took from Marvo a couple of days ago. Talk about throwing it back in his or her face. It's you that is obviously missing the point. By the way Jez, where do you sit?

Friday, February 3, 2012 at 06:34 PMThat's irony for you. I have an LLB in law and stood on the Spion Kop from 1958 until the move to Sixfields. I am still a season ticket holder. On my way back from London. Will respond in full tomorrow.

Friday, February 3, 2012 at 12:20 PMThespionkoppite. Are you a scouser or something - that must explain why you did not get the drift of my argument - as Rumpole of the Bailey said - " I rest my case"

Friday, February 3, 2012 at 10:18 AMrog green. You can't come out with a comment like that and then make a comment on it. For what it's worth, I am in agreement with robbie, therealcobbler, steve and you (I think). A lot of the budget is tied up with the high wages of some of the players who are obviously not part of the current managers plans and he can't be held responsible for not being able to use those funds. We are merely trying to show support for Boothroyd who is under enough pressure as it is. Like you say everyone is entitled to their opinion but it's about time people like Marvo and Jez stick to the issue without the sarcasm and cods wallop comments. Up the Town !!!!!

Friday, February 3, 2012 at 10:01 AMIsn't it about time this pointless cross banter stopped - the key issue is that the crowd need to get behind the players and act as their twelfth man.Even though the Cobblers are currently in a mess the fact that the attendances are still holding up proves that most true Cobblers supporters are behind the team and what AB is trying to achieve.Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I for one take the view that the views of people writing in to the Chron and contacting Radio Northampton are not a true representation of the views of the majority of Cobblers supporteres. Looks like Macclesfield's boss is going to use the "buy your way out of trouble" argument to psyche up his players before tomorrow's game.

Friday, February 3, 2012 at 09:07 AMRow Q mate. Look forward to it. And you are? Certainly a turnaround with your opinion. You partially agreed with me before. So if we drop out of the league Boothroyd should get the sack. What nonsense. Incorrect substitutions, line-ups etc will always be a matter of opinion. We need a steady ship for at least two years. No wonder Northamptonions are known as a load of moaners.
