Northampton Town: Boss Aidy’s on a high as he lands striker Williams to replace Berahino
AIDY BOOTHROYD believes new loan signing Brett Williams will bring five key qualities to the Cobblers team.
The striker signed on a month-long deal from npower Championship side Reading yesterday and Boothroyd immediately highlighted the 24-year-old’s ‘pace, power, strength, height and goals’.
Williams will fill the void left by outgoing hitman Saido Berahino, who has returned to parent club West Brom.
Berahino, who scored six goals in 15 games for the Cobblers, is understood to be joining npower League One outfit Brentford in the next few days.
Boothroyd feels Williams will be a more than adequate replacement, though, and looks set to throw the former Eastleigh striker in at the deep end against Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday.
“I think he’ll bring power, he’ll bring pace, he’ll bring strength and height and I think he’ll bring goals,” said the Cobblers boss of his new recruit.
“He’s got a phenomenal record at non-League level and sometimes players go out on loan, find their feet a little bit.
“He’s got two goals in five games (during a recent loan spell) at Rotherham, he’s come back, he doesn’t want to go back there.
“We saw the opportunity to get in quickly and I want to get to a position where we’re a team that’s not only strong at the back but has a number of ways to score a goal. He’ll certainly provide another option.”
Williams, who worked as a taxi driver during his time at Eastleigh, joined Reading in a £50,000 deal last January and has since spent a loan spell at Rotherham.
The frontman’s final game for the Millers came at Dagenham as he came off the bench for the final five minutes in a 3-2 defeat at Victoria Road on January 28.
And it now looks likely Williams’ first appearance for the Cobblers will come at the same ground as Boothroyd aims to give his new man a chance to shine at league two level.
“I’m hopeful that Brett’s going to come in and improve the team,” said Boothroyd.
“He’s a good player, I like him and he’s one of these guys who needs a canvas on which to paint and we’ll be that canvas for him.
“We’ll see how it works out but we’re very grateful to Reading and Brian McDermott for giving us the opportunity and it’s another loan player coming from a club at a much higher level.”

Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 12:18 PMKidderminster is a very nice ground. There is a steam train that operates from just behing the main stand. Five "key qualities?" So why does he have to have a drinks bottle to his mouth? Babies give this up when they are 3 or 4 years old. Luton next, is this a bigger dump then Northampton? No doubt someone from from Northampton College of lower education could write a dissertation on this. They claim to have a college of lower education as well.
