Northampton Town: Boothroyd ‘We need to get this club off its backside’

Aidy Boothroyd can’t wait to get Northampton Town Football Club ‘off its backside’ – but admits it may take some time.

And the Cobblers boss has played down the importance of Saturday’s visit of Barnet to Sixfields as the team look to improve on their current position of bottom of the Football League.

On Saturday they came unstuck – eventually – against a Southend side who went top as a result of their 5-2 triumph.

Boothroyd must have looked over at a Blues bench containing the likes of Bilel Mohsni, Anthony Grant and Neil Harris with envious eyes, and he said: “We’re having a bit of a time at the moment but nobody ever said it would be easy.

“It’s a club that has been relegated from league one and been on its backside for a long time.

“We want to get out of this league but we’ve got a long way to go before we can start thinking about that.”

As soon as the final whistle went on Saturday, thoughts turned to the game against Barnet this weekend.

The Bees have made struggling for league two survival into an art form in the past few years, and this season has been no exception to the general rule that their name can usually be found around the bottom of the league table.

But beyond the bare minimum requirements – fighting for their lives, energy, passion, uptempo football – Boothroyd is not attaching any extra-special importance to the next fixture on the list.

“They’re all crucial, there are no bigger ones than others,” he said.

“Games are running out but we’ve got games left to get out of the position we are in and I’m very confident we will do that.

“I look around at the players and I look at the performances and I know that, I think the supporters know it as well.

“They’re not stupid, they are seeing a team that are always in matches and are giving it a real go.

“We’re a club that’s tidying up and making sure we’re always in a game and fighting for our lives and we’ll do that against Barnet as well.”

There was plenty of discontent 16 miles south of Sixfields on Saturday afternoon when Milton Keynes’ Dons game against Carlisle United was postponed just 75 minutes before kick-off.

Because the squad had already left, the Dons will be liable for all of Carlisle’s matchday expenses, which includes a hotel bill for an overnight stay.

But the Cumbrians’ supporters will have to fork out again to follow their club in the rearranged fixture.

Bilel Mohnsi came off the bench to score two goals for Southend and inspire them to victory but he nearly didn’t play after dropping a fridge on his toe after moving house.

While Town had no control over the Frenchman’s recovery from that white goods-related mishap, they could have prevented him getting on the pitch on Saturday.

Just before his introduction, Mohsni made a quick dash to the toilet in the away dressing room.

If only someone had thought to follow him down the tunnel and lock the door...

Let's have a terrace behind the goal - that'll get us all off our backsides! If only.
