Northampton Town: Boothroyd slams Cobblers and says performance against Vale was not good enough
AIDY BOOTHROYD slammed his Cobblers team for ‘playing at testimonial pace’ against Port Vale, and said the defeat was exactly what they deserved.
Town were beaten 2-1 at Sixfields by the Valiants with Adebayo Akinfenwa on target for his 11th of the season and a 50th for the club.
It was a result that brought to an end a miniature revival of two victories on the bounce but could have been worse, with results at the bottom end of npower League Two all largely going their way.
All of the teams around Northampton in the table drew, meaning they are still just a point off safety, but Boothroyd still cut a frustrated figure after the game.
“I think we got what we deserved,” he said. “You can’t play any fixture in any league and start playing with 15 minutes to go.
“From the start they played at league two match pace and we played at testimonial pace.
“We were well worth our victories in the two games prior to this one but after this you have to hold your hands up and say that’s not what we’re all about.
“We have to make sure we learn from that. We knew exactly what Port Vale were going to be like and we had a game plan to deal with that.
“We didn’t stick to that and not only did we not stick to it but we gave them the opportunity to attack more and get in good positions.”
Of great concern to the Cobblers boss was the manner of the defeat, with the team showing little intensity in the first 75 minutes of the game before a spell of attacking that came far too late in the day.
Boothroyd now begins preparation for Saturday’s difficult-looking trip to play second-placed Cheltenham Town at Whaddon Road.
“Matt Duke kept us in it and I told the lads that at half-time,” he said. “When you’re playing football, if you are getting beat, there’s a way to get beat.
“You get beat giving it your all and making sure you put the opposition under pressure. I don’t think we did that until the latter stages of the game.
“It is disappointing that we didn’t do that but I didn’t go home and cry about it, we go to work today preparing and planning for our next game, at Cheltenham on Saturday.”

Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at 02:39 PMI find the terminology of "around 4,000" interesting. In only one of the 18 seasons since we moved to Sixfields have we had an average BELOW 4,500.

Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at 12:27 PMI'm glad your wild ranting comment was removed. I think it's about time some of the supporters started supporting and stopped expecting. I like my team to win, but I don't expect it. If you don't like spending the money for what get for it, don't spend the money!!! ... P.S. For the record Upton I certainly am not in denial about the situation we find ourselves in, but I am realistic. With an average home crowd of around 4,000 we are in no way immune to the drop to non-league football, do the sums yourself.

Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at 08:34 AMThere are no grounds for criticising the chairman. It is his company, his money and he does what he likes. If we don't like it he could walk any time, and I don't exactly see a huge queue of people waiting to replace him, or none with enough money to make any difference. I'm just surprised he hasn't walked already.

Monday, February 27, 2012 at 11:38 PMNot totally in his pocket, that would be too obvious for both parties, BUT a fear of rocking the boat too much and thus losing the club's co-operation, is how I would put it.

Monday, February 27, 2012 at 10:43 PMThanks Steve. I didn't know that DC has the Chron in his pocket. No wonder the spin prevails !

Monday, February 27, 2012 at 08:12 PMI think you will find, Upton (your comments 5 & 11) that there is a level of fear among certain people at the C&E about treading on Mr Cardoza's toes, because Cobblers' news helps to sell this newspaper and Mr Cardoza likes to have control over what gets printed.

Monday, February 27, 2012 at 06:43 PMSorry, should be 6 defeats for Johnson. Shame we haven't got an edit facility on here.

Monday, February 27, 2012 at 06:41 PMIn Gary Johnson's last 12 games in charge (League), our record was 3 wins, 3 draws, 2 defeats, Goals scored 16, conceded 21. In Ady Boothroyd's 12 games in charge we've won 3, drawn 2, lost 7, scoring 15 and conceding 22. It's remarkable how similar the records are!

Monday, February 27, 2012 at 05:02 PMCensored because I dared to criticize the Chairman ? The buck stops with the man at the top. and the fact that he's not just the Chairman, but a custodian of MY club, means that he's certainly not. beyond reproach.

Monday, February 27, 2012 at 02:57 PMI have already renewed my season ticket for next season, doesnt matter what division we are in, we could be in the UCL for all I care, the end of the day they are my localhome town team and I will support them through bad and good times no matter what and not just be a glory supporter because we are winning games or doing well or be an arm chair supporter of a big premier league club.

Monday, February 27, 2012 at 02:41 PMThe reality is that we have got a very good chance of going down to the BSP. If that happens I forsee the end of the club as we know it. The income both from within and outside of the club will drop considerably and there's certainly no guarantee that we'll bounce back up. I suggest that you're in total denial of the situation, and if you believe it satisfactory that we're 91st in the league then I ask myself what's the point of continuing to support a club with zero ambition.

Monday, February 27, 2012 at 02:20 PMRE: Upton, I tell you what, I would have a lovely season if I could go up to Sixfields and sit in an empty stadium, or at least with people that I knew where there because they wanted to be, and not because they've been going up there so long that they've lost all sense of reality! You should really get out and do something different for a while! he he.

Monday, February 27, 2012 at 12:42 PMJEZ- Enjoy next season sittingf there like Bill Nomates in an empty stadium. For far too long the fans have had to put up with absolute rubbish on the pitch, and to defend the indefensible just about sums some Cobblers fans up.There is no way that we should be in this position, it's the end result oif poor decision after poor decision from the management..
