COBBLERS boss Aidy Boothroyd came out fighting after Saturday’s defeat to Barnet and says he is relishing the challenge of maintaining League football at Sixfields.

Town were beaten 2-1 at home by the Bees despite leading 1-0 at half-time, a result that keeps them bottom of npower League Two. Boothroyd’s men are now as short as 11/10 with the bookmakers to be relegated this season.

But their manager, who delayed his post-match press conference because he wanted to ‘calm down’ after a dramatic second half, says he is looking forward to the prospect of keeping the Cobblers in the League.

“I’m ready for a fight,” he said. “Is it a low point? Yes it is. But you have to put your fists up and get fighting or you get knocked out. You’ve got to make your own luck, you’ve got to keep chipping away, and we’ve got to use that defeat to bounce back.

“There are areas of the pitch we need to improve on and we’ll keep working to find the solution.

“Life is like that, it kicks you when you’re down and we’ve got to get ourselves up and get on with it. The fans here have got a manager that cares about his job, who has had a bit of success and a bit of failure, and who doesn’t mind a bit of adversity because he knows it’ll make you stronger.

“I’m looking forward to this. I know that might sound a bit sick but I’m going to find out about the players now, they’re going to find out about me and between us we’re going to make it work.”

Boothroyd is confident there will come a time when the current crisis is a distant memory.

“When you’re down there, it doesn’t matter how good you are, it’s results that count,” he said. “But you don’t get results unless you are putting in consistent performances.

“That is going to take a lot of hard work behind the scenes but I’m prepared to do that and one day we’ll look back and remember how miserable I was at this point and think how happy I am.”
