Northampton Town: Boothroyd’s ‘happier than he’s been’ at Town strength in depth
Northampton Town FC V Torquay United
BOSS Aidy Boothroyd says he is now far happier with the Cobblers squad than he has ever been.
Boothroyd has been backed by Town chairman David Cardoza, drafting in a number of new recruits since taking charge of the club in November.
The likes of Clarke Carlisle and Luke Guttridge have been brought in to bolster the team in their npower League Two survival bid.
And with one more loan move yet to be made, Boothroyd, who signed Reading striker Brett Williams on a month’s loan on Wednesday, could yet add another name to his squad list.
But the Sixfields supremo claims he is in no rush to bring anyone else in, saying his squad has never been in better shape.
“Just looking at the squad as it is now, I’m far happier with it than I’ve ever been,” said Boothroyd. “The strength, particularly down the spine of the team, makes us look a lot stronger.
“We’re a lot more battle-hardened with the players that are in there. They can handle the situation we’re in and the expectation of the manager.”
One member of the current squad of whom much was expected but little has been seen is Jake Robinson, who moved to Northampton last summer.
The former Shrewsbury striker has yet to score a goal for the Cobblers, but despite fielding enquiries for the player, Boothroyd has no intention of letting him leave.
“Robinson was actually due to be playing Saturday against Macclesfield so Jake’s back and he’s involved,” said the Town manager.
“I’ve had a number of enquiries about him but to be honest I don’t see the point in getting rid of a player that scored 15 goals last year and has got a one in six ratio in his career.
“He’s back in the fold and he’ll be fighting for his place whether that be in a wide area or playing up front with Bayo. We’ll just see where it all develops.
“We’ve got a lot of games in a short space of time and the last thing we need is to be leaving ourselves short in any areas of the pitch.
“I’ve said all along that the squad needs to be reduced but it’s got to be taken down with quality.
“We will have enquiries and some will be allowed to move on because we need to do that but others will be part of my plans and be staying.”
