Northampton Town: Boothroyd excited at prospect of Town run of crucial games
Cobblers V Southend United, football action. Aidy Boothroyd.
AIDY BOOTHROYD says he can’t wait to get stuck into the run of three big games his Cobblers side play in the space of 10 days this month.
On Saturday, Town head to Dagenham & Redbridge to face a team just three points above them in the lower reaches of npower League Two
After that, it’s back-to-back Tuesday matches under the Sixfields lights, against Wimbledon and then Macclesfield in a game rearranged from Saturday.
Town do not play a week on Saturday as Crawley Town are in FA Cup action, but Boothroyd is looking to build some momentum in a frantic fortnight.
“I’m really looking forward to this run of games we’ve got coming up,” said the Cobblers boss, who has had to tailor training this week after the region’s weekend snowfall.
“We have a little run of games where we are playing on a lot of Tuesday nights and that gives us a really good opportunity to rack up some points.
“I can’t wait for these games because we can use them to get some good momentum going and we can really start to climb the table.
The window to loan players opens today and the Cobblers will look to add to their squad ahead of the trip to Dagenham.
Although they have lost Saido Berahino back to West Bromwich Albion, Boothroyd has been happy with the changes he has made to the Sixfields squad over the past two months.
“We’re still a couple of players away from where I’d ideally like the squad to be but I’m happy with the changes we’ve made in personnel and where we are with that,” he said.
“It’s a bit like a game of chess, you need to find things out about what players are going where and what effect that might have on the ones you want to sign.
“We’ve been quite lucky because we’ve got our first-choices on just about all of our signings but you need to have back-up options if they don’t come off.”
Berahino has enjoyed a successful spell at Northampton, bagging six goals in 15 appearances and providing much-needed energy in the system which sees him operate as a lone striker.
The Baggies may now want to see how the England youth international fares at a higher level, and Berahino’s departure does free up space for another loanee both in the budget and under Football League rules.
“He’s done really well here which means he’ll have other options but so will we,” said Boothroyd, who can now make two new loan signings following Ben Harding’s switch from loan player to permanent signing in the transfer window.
