Cobblers Transfer News: Clarke Carlisle signs on loan
Cobblers latest news
THE Cobblers have confirmed they have signed experienced Burnley defender Clarke Carlisle on loan until the end of the season.
The 6ft 3in 32 year old, who made 20 appearances on loan at Preston North End during the first half of this season, has made almost 500 career appearances, scoring 35 goals.
The powerful defender brings a winning mentality to the squad having previous promotions on his CV with Leeds, Watford and most recently Burnley when they won the Championship Play-Offs three seasons ago.
The former England U21 International began his career at Blackpool and from there he has played for a host of different clubs including Leeds United and Watford.
Carlisle is an outstanding ambassador for the game and is the chairman of the Professional Footballers Association.
During the 2009/10 season Carlisle made a successful appearance on Channel Four quiz Countdown and following on from that he was asked to be a guest on the BBC Question Time panel.
The defender was the first footballer to be on the show, and Clarke was hugely successful on the political debate programme.
Carlisle is also studying a two-year degree course at Staffordshire University.
“Clarke is a player I have worked with before,” said boss Aidy Boothroyd.
“He is a leader in every sense of the word. He has won 3 promotions with 3 different clubs, he has played in the Premier League and he is a winner.
“He is a very strong character on and off the pitch, and he is just the sort of player we need to help us get the club back to where we believe we should be.”
Speaking on Twitter, Carlisle, who was playing in the Premier League for Burnley just 18 months ago, said: “Hello to #NTFC and all their fans! It’s a pleasure to join up with Aidy again and I hope I can contribute to the battle for survival #letsgo”

Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 10:10 AMwhy all the talk about the centre Backs, Carlisle is good for sure but if we don't get a good striker to turn the chances into goals we'l go down and thats for sure, 0-0 are no good to us, we need to start winning games and the only we will do that is by scoreing goals. come on A B get us a good striker !!!.

Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 09:31 AMWhy all this hype about Webster - the guy is too slow and his distribution is not as good as Langmead and for a guy of his height he does not win enough ball in th air. It is a no brainer- the pairing should be Langmead and Carlisle.

Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 08:28 PMWelcome Clarke. Be interesting to see who Aidy pairs him, the youngster Webster or Langmead. I'd go Webster, could do him the world of good having an experienced pro to learn the trade, however considering Aidy only recently signed up Langmead with an 18 month contract I'd guess he'll get first go.
