Cobblers Preview: Boothroyd looking for three points against promotion chasing Southend
Northampton Town Football Club v Swindon Town at Sixfields. Arron Davies, Saido Berahino, Ashley Corker and Lewis Young.
AIDY BOOTHROYD says there’s no reason why the Cobblers shouldn’t be confident of beating promotion-chasing Southend tomorrow.
The Town boss, buoyed by last weekend’s 2-1 win against Morecambe, which ended a 14-game winless streak, is confident ahead of the clash with the second-placed Shrimpers.
Paul Sturrock’s side have impressed in npower League Two this season and have high hopes of making the step up.
But the Cobblers have already shown they can compete with tomorrow’s opponents, having claimed a 2-2 draw in the reverse fixture back in September.
Goals from Adebayo Akinfenwa and Arron Davies ensured a point at Roots Hall and Boothroyd sees no reason why the Cobblers shouldn’t get another positive result this weekend.
“It should be a decent game and it’s one I’m really looking forward to,” said Boothroyd.
“Southend will put out a team that is very difficult to beat but it’s a game both teams will think they can win.
“Paul Sturrock has been there and done it and he won’t be getting too excited about being in the top three now because nothing gets won in January.
“Our last four performances have been pleasing, we’ve been in every game and we’ve started to concede less goals.
“We still haven’t kept a clean sheet but that’s something I’m very much looking to do in the next few games.”
The Cobblers have been boosted by the return of playmaker Davies, who has been back in training this week after recovering from a groin injury.
And Boothroyd has a decision to make in terms of who will start in goal as he could opt to bring in a new stopper or stick with Freddy Hall, who impressed at Morecambe last Saturday.
