The Cobblers have completed the signing of Tranmere Rovers left-back Evan Horwood on loan until the end of the season.
The 28-year-old, who has played the bulk of his career at Hartlepool United, joins the squad as extra defensive cover for Joe Widdowson, who has an ankle injury.
Widdowson trained with the squad prior to the game at Morecambe but suffered a setback and was not named in the matchday squad.
And with Gregor Robertson, who has played left-back for the past seven games, also the cover for central defence, the decision was made to add some depth in defence.
“I’ve known Evan for quite a while,” he said. “He’s played the majority of his football in league one and he’s a good player, an attacking full-back.
“He’ll be a valuable addition to the squad for the run-in.
“We’ve got an in and out situation with Joe at the moment; he trained a couple of times before the Morecambe game and he’s not quite right.
“With the transfer window closing we needed a bit of cover in that position and it also gives us the option to go to three at the back if we want to.”
