Breaking News: Boothroyd: We won’t feel sorry for ourselves

COBBLERS boss Aidy Boothroyd says neither he nor his players are feeling sorry for themselves despite crashing to a 5-2 Sixfields defeat at the hands of Southend United on Saturday.

Town led a pulsating game twice thanks to goals from John Johnson and Saido Berahino, and with nine minutes remaining were on course for a share of the spoils at 2-2.

But a ruthless Southend scored three times in the closing stages to secure a 5-2 win and go top of npower League Two, with the impressive Liam Dickenson and Bilel Mohsni both scoring twice.

The Cobblers have now dropped back to bottom place in the Football League thanks to Plymouth Argyle seeing off Burton Albion 2-1 at Home Park, but Boothroyd is still in a positive frame of mind.

Town are at home again on Saturday when they take on a Barnet side just five points above them in the table, and Boothroyd says he and his players are determined to claim their first win at Sixfields since September.

“We can’t feel sorry for ourselves and we’ve just got to keep working hard,” said Boothroyd.

“We’ve got games left to get us out of the position we are in, and when I look at our performances and the players that we have got in the dressing room, then I am confident we will do that.

“Every game is crucial and we are all well aware that we need to get a result against Barnet.”

Read Jefferson Lake’s verdict on the Cobblers’ performance against Southend in tomorrow night’s Chronicle & Echo.

There is also plenty more reaction, as well as some great pictures.

Men in Claret. Forget about Building a play off team, we need a team to get us out of this mess. We still need a good keeper a good old headed Centre Half and a forward to put in more of the chances the midfield are making, or we will go down.

1. Southend were IMHO by far and away the best team we have seen at Sixfields this season; in the last few games there has been a marked improvement, I remain convinced that AB will steer the club free from relegation and build a playoff challenging team next season. 2. There is no such thing as a MK Dons fan. Period

I've been speaking to Wrexham, Mansfield and Grimsby fans. It's a similar story theyw ent on a slope and just could not get off. We have no luck (Higgs out for 9 months, Dailly injured on eve of joining), we have no quality and we seem to have no idea. Incidentally i can recall Mr Johnson chatising his squad and arguing that they won't be here long because they are not good enough. Now its the turn of Mr Boothroyd it seems. Same song being sung to slightly different if somewhat similar lyrics? A lot of the blame must go to our "trigger happy" chairman he clearly sacked Sammo too early last year and is now living to regret this big time.

Always said I would support the town in whatever leaqgue we were playing in but the highly likely prospect of non league football and constantly watching the team lose at home in an embarrassing manner makes me question whether I pay for a season ticket for next year or not, something needs to change quickly no team is too big to go down ask Oxford, Grimsby, Luton, Mansfield, Lincoln, Wrexham, they've all gone down only one has come back.

Get rid of all the players we dont want and those that are just hanging around due to thier lucrative contracts - easy even if they under contract. Make life so hard for them 4 hours hard training Morning and Afternoon 5 days a week. If they dont turn up or dont put the effort in a fine of £100 each session . ?They will soon get fed up and leave of thier own accord.

Can you believe it

I feel quite guilty. Two years ago the Cobblers forced all MK Dons fans to pay again for a match that was abandoned at half time due to the rain. Their season ticket holders did not pay though! A curse was put on the Cobblers because of this double standard treatment. To take the curse off tthe Cobblers should apologise in this paper for treating the MK Dons this way and then you will not be sent down to the depths of the Conference.

I don´t think we can criticise the players for their effort on Saturday, they worked their socks off, and that is the problem - it is their quality that is lacking. Hopefully with enough effort we will meet poorer sides from whom we can extract enough points to possibly avoid the drop, but if we have any pretensions about making progress up the league we have to find a new team of quality players...and where can you find them for the sort of money that we have in our budget? You can't just keep adding players to the squad without shipping out some of the dross, and nobody wants our washed-out failing players. It's a problem for which I cannot see a solution at this moment.
