The 28-year-old joins Northampton on a three-year deal, with Town quickly snapping up a player only transfer-listed by the Gigg Lane club last week.

Bury boss David Flitcroft’s decision to make Adams available was a surprising one, as he had played a key role in the Shakers’ promotion from Sky Bet League Two, and had signed a three-year deal there only last summer.

Adams made 33 starts for Bury last season, although his last start for them was in the Shakers’ 2-1 win over the Cobblers at Gigg Lane - a match in which he was substitued at half-time.

In all the Bolton-born player made 44 appearances as the Shakers clinched third place in league two, and was expected to be a key squad man next season as he has played the bulk of his career at league one level with the likes of Leicester City, Crawley Town and Rochdale.

But Flitcroft decided Adams wasn’t in his plans, and Cobblers boss Wilder moved swiftly to land a player his assistant boss at Sixfields, Alan Knill, has worked with before.

Knill was the manager at Bury for the final four months of Adams’ first stint at the club where the player began his career, and oversaw the sale of him to Leicester for £100,000 in the summer of 2008.

Adams spent two seasons with the Foxes before signing for Brentford, and from there he moved to Rochdale, Crawley and Rotherham United, before moving back to Bury last summer.

He has also enjoyed a loan spell with Leyton Orient.

In all, Adams has made 294 Football League starts as well as 87 substitute appearances, scoring 15 goals.

He is also a former Wales Under-21 international, winning five caps.
