Newport County manager Justin Edinburgh has revealed he has been ‘approached’ by the Cobblers despite the club not having permission to do so.

It was confirmed this morning (January 23) that no formal application had been made by Northampton Town to Newport to speak to Edinburgh about the vacancy at Sixfields.

But the Exiles boss has told reporters in his weekly press conference that representatives from Town have spoken to him.

“There’s been no approach to the football club but they’re right in what they’ve said; there has been an approach to myself,” Edinburgh told the South Wales Argus.

“But as I’ve always said I’ve got a job to finish here and I’m happy here.

“As with any individual that gets linked somewhere it’s flattering but I’ve got a lot of work to do here.

“I’m ambitious, I want to be progressive and right now I feel I can do that here.”

Under Football Association regulations, a club must not form contact with either a player or his agent without acquiring permission from the football club with whom he is currently under contract.
