Drury: Cobblers win proves we're ready
Graham Drury believes Corby Town's 2-1 win over Northampton Town proves the Steelmen will be able to make the step up to Blue Square North.
Corby controlled much of the game and deserved their victory against a lack-lustre Cobblers side who didn't look like they played two levels above Corby in Coca-Cola League Two.
And Steelmen boss Drury feels the nature of the victory is a sign that Corby will be able to create and score the goals they need to make an impact in their new league.
"It was a fantastic performance, we scored two good goals, alright one was an own goal but the build-up play was excellent, and with the chances we created we could have had five or six," he said.
"It was a good, solid performance until we made a lot of changes and the only reason we perhaps looked less good after that was because we had several players playing out of position.
"But for most of the time we looked very good and compact and presented a very solid barrier."
Drury was particularly happy with the contribution of the starting front two, former Cobblers man Jason Lee – who got the opening goal – and Mark Stallard for the way they held up play and brought others into the game.
One of those who benefited was another former Sixfields man, Lawrie Dudfield, who is fast making the right midfield slot his own.
"Lawrie likes to play up front but he also enjoys getting wide and we like to push the wingers on and he's filling that role well," said Drury.
"I also thought Dave Deeney had another excellent game in midfield and he's done very well since coming into the role after Brett Solkhon got injured, put some great shifts in and got better and better as we've gone on."
Corby lad Billy McKay got the Cobblers' goal but even that was only down to a rare moment of slack play at the back by the Steelmen.
Drury will now turn his attention to tomorrow night's recently-arranged friendly at Spalding United, after which he will make his final decisions on who will be part of the squad for the start of the league season.
