The England all-rounder finished the day not out on 111 as the home side closed on 319-6 from their 96 overs.

It was a good recovery by Sussex, the occupants of the place immediately above Northants in the Division One relegation zone who, having been put into bat after Stephen Peters won the toss, recovered from a potentially damaging 166-5.

David Willey, with his first Championship wickets of an injury-hit campaign, dismissed both Chris Nash and Ed Joyce as the visitors worked their way steadily through the top order.

But Wright combined with Ben Brown (47) in a sixth-wicket stand of 136 to stop the rot and turn the momentum on its head.

The County’s side from the draw at Lord’s contaied two changes with Maurice Chambers (dropped) and Rob Keogh (injured) replaced by Willey and Kyle Coetzer.
