Season closes with a tame draw

The summer of 2014 will be remembered for a series of heavy defeat and a record-low points score in Division One of the LV= County Championship.

But the last of the action saw play brought to an early end with Sussex 332 runs ahead and the County still in possession of nine second innings wickets.

The visitors had finally been bowled out 343 in their second knock.

Luke Wells’ 162 was the stand-out performance although when he fell to Mohammad Azharullah it set the Northamptonshire paceman on his way to near career-best figures.

He took 7-76, just outside his top effort of 7-74, as he helped to mop up the tail.

The County’s reply saw Stephen Peters (42no) and James Kettleborough (33) put on 81 for the first wicket.

Soon after the latter was out, time was called on the game and a season to forget.
