Peters rapt as County win in style

Northamptonshire captain Stephen Peters now has a victory to his name and he admitted to be delighted with the style in which it was accomplished.

Peters’ former county, Essex, were dispatched by an innings and nine runs with four sessions to spar at the County Ground, leaving their skipper in high spirits.

He said: “I couldn’t be more pleased with the result but it’s not just the win, it’s the manner in which we won.

“The game changed on our nine, 10 and 11 batting performance but it’s been our bowling performances that have been pleasing. Our disciplines with the ball have been top class and even when the opposition have had a 50 or 60 partnership, we’ve been able to nick a couple off in quick succession.

“They’ve bowled beautifully as a unit and what I’ve liked is that when someone else has come on to bowl, they’ve taken on the mantle from whoever they’vereplaced and bowled just as tightly.”

As well as the side bowled, Peters acknowledged the impact the lower order had on the second day when they turned a potential deficit into a commanding advantage.

He continued: “You pick 11 players and if they can all bat then brilliant. Poor old Trent (Copeland) down the bottom there, he wasn’t overly impressed with the conversation we had before the Cardiff game but no-one has had the mentality of a number nine, 10 or 11, they’ve all played properly.”

The bandwagon rolls on to Bristol next week for the clash with Gloucestershire and Peters insisted that complacency won’t be an issue.

“We’ll be confident of going there and putting in a performance but come Monday morning, we’ll be back in here practising and we’ll work as hard next week,” he said.

“I’ll make sure of that because we want to continue with what we’ve been doing.”
