Northants youngster Stone makes debut as England captain

Northamptonshire's Olly Stone has been appointed as captain of England Under-19s

Northamptonshire's Olly Stone has been appointed as captain of England Under-19s

Olly Stone made 29 on his debut as England Under-19 captain in the first Youth Test against South Africa.

The Northamptonshire all-rounder was appointed to the role when Leicestershire’s Shiv Thakor was ruled out of the remainder of the tour after breaking a finger in a warm-up match.

And his first job was to lead his country in the first encounter of a two-Test series in Cape Town with the second clash taking place in Paarl at the end of the week.

At Newlands, Stone, who was making his Youth Test debut along with all 10 of his team-mates and the entire opposition XI, was joined in the side by his County colleague Ben Duckett as the visitors posted a first innings total of 313 early on day two.

Duckett made 13 at number four with Stone’s effort coming at number eight.

Worcestershire’s Ed Barnard top-scored with 113 after England had been reduced to 89-5.
