Loanee Rossington, who was this week offered a two-year contract by the County in a bid to tempt him away from Middlesex on a permanent basis, equalled his career best as he made 103 in a score of 260 all out.

James Middlebrook’s 32 was the next highest score in an innings that saw seven players reach double figures.

It might not have appeared to be the strongest of totals but an excellent spell of bowling from Willey ensured Northamptonshire finished the day on top.

Returning from an impressive time with England Lions, Willey collected figures of 7-4-9-3 in an opening surge that saw him remove Stephen Mullany, Alex Hales and Samit Patel all for single-figure scores.

Mohammad Azharullah accounted for James Taylor and Notts limped to the close on 38-4.
