Cobblers win 9-0 to boost confidence
Northampton Town boss Stuart Gray insists his side's training game demolition of a UK Servicemens' XI yesterday was a worthwhile exercise.
Eight different players scored in a 9-0 triumph in a contest the manager admitted was a mis-match.
Colin Larkin (2), Adebayo Akinfenwa, Ryan Gilligan, Liam Davis, Greg Taylor, Danny Jackman, Joey Benjamin and Ian Henderson all on target.
And Gray feels the fact all his centre-forwards got on the scoresheet will prove beneficial in the long run.
"Nothing beats playing, particularly when you are winning and scoring goals and although the game was only really an extended training session for us, the lads would always prefer to play rather than train," he said.
"With the game at Brackley and then on Monday we had had two games in four days with a fair bit of travelling and training to fit in as well so we were looking for a fairly gentle run out and that is what we got.
"It's fair to say the sides were not particularly evenly matched but for the strikers it is good to play and score goals, whoever the opposition. That will give them confidence, and to keep another clean sheet shows we are organised and defending properly.
"A number of the lads got more football under their belts and that is the main aim of this trip."
The game also allowed Akinfenwa, Chris Doig and Mark Hughes to play some football and continue to build their match fitness, while there was also a cameo for assistant manager Ian Sampson, who played 32 minutes.
