COBBLERS: Town hopeful for fixture
The Cobblers are confident Boxing Day's game against Dagenham & Redbridge at Sixfields will go ahead.
Saturday's game at Darlington was postponed due to a frozen pitch, along with every other fixture in Coca-Cola League Two except one.
The Sixfields playing surface remains under a layer of snow, and was not in a very good condition 10 days ago after the under-18s' FA Youth Cup game against Brighton & Hove Albion.
But Town boss Ian Sampson does not anticipate there being any problems with the Boxing Day fixture taking place.
"We are confident that the game will be on," said the manager, who had travelled north with the squad for what turned out to be a wasted journey at the weekend.
"The pitch here is very soft at the moment underneath a blanket of snow. We want to keep that covering in place to keep the pitch warm as long as possible.
"I am sure there won't be a problem at all.
"The country has been hit hard with snow and ice this week and a lot of clubs have been struggling for training facilities."
Town were denied the opportunity to improve their morale at Darlington, where they were favourites to pick up the three points.
That game will now be played on Tuesday January 26, and its postponement means the Cobblers will have gone two weeks between the Dagenham match and the 1-1 draw with Port Vale.
If nothing else, that will have given Sampson extra time to get some of his injured players closer to fitness.
"We fancied our chances last Saturday but it was not to be," he said.
"The break has at least given some of the injured lads longer to recover.
"Andy Holt may be back for Boxing Day and Luke Guttridge will be 50-50 but I don't think the rest will be fit.
"The problem for Luke is we are struggling to get a lot of training into him with the weather as it is but we haven't ruled him out totally.
"He is in the latter stages of his rehab now and he is coming on."
