Cobblers striker Guinan set to stay at Sixfields
Cobblers boss Ian Sampson says he would have to 'think twice' about now letting striker Steve Guinan leave the club.
And the Town manager has revealed he will not be able to use the money saved by Chris McCready's transfer to Morecambe – because his wages have already been spent on John Johnson.
Guinan found himself placed on the transfer list at the end of last season, alongside McCready and Craig Hinton.
Several clubs have spoken to the 35-year-old this summer about a move away from Sixfields, but after scoring four goals in six pre-season friendly matches, Guinan has worked his way back into favour at Sixfields.
Such is his form and sharpness so far this summer, Sampson would now be reluctant to allow the player to leave the club.
"He's a goalscorer and the goals against Nuneaton the other night were two good finishes," he said. "I would have thought that if anyone comes in for him now then we might have to think twice about it.
"Chris' move is good for him and good for us. He wasn't going to play so it's worked out okay for everyone.
"I've still got four centre-halves and I'm not looking to bring anyone else in at the moment, even if one of those four is carrying an injury (Hinton).
"Chris' wage meant I could bring Johnno (Johnson) in, it just worked out that the deals overlapped a little bit."
Courtney Herbert partnered Guinan up front at Nuneaton and laid on both goals in the 2-0 triumph. The former Long Buckby striker is also enjoying a good warm-up to the 2010-11 campaign, having already found the target twice.
Sampson utilised Herbert's pace in a more direct style on Tuesday night, with the striker stretching play on alternating wings to good effect.
The player is, according to his manager, benefiting from a first ever pre-season, but the Cobblers boss feels Herbert could improve – if he paid more attention to the advice he is given on the training ground.
"It is a benefit to him, getting a pre-season into him but he'll benefit more if he starts listening to what his coaches tell him," he said.
"He's not done anything like this pre-season in his life so undoubtedly that will help him.
"But he just does the wrong things. We ask him to do one thing and he does the other; the other night he did what we asked him."
