COBBLERS: Johnson to stay on

On-loan Middlesbrough defender John Johnson will sign a fresh deal at the Cobblers that will keep him at the club until the end of the current campaign.

Johnson was denied a run-out in his native north-east at the weekend when the scheduled trip to Darlington was postponed due to a frozen pitch.

That appearance would have been his penultimate before a final game in Town colours - on Boxing Day against Dagenham & Redbridge at Sixfields.

Under Football League rules, players who have spent the maximum 93-day period out on loan cannot have this extended unless it is until the end of the season.

That means Johnson will be unable to play at Barnet on December 28, although it is understood he will continue to train at Northampton for the duration.

Manager Ian Sampson was pleased to have secured the services of a player who has been the picture of consistency since he arrived at the club.

"We've agreed to extend his loan until the end of the season and that's going to be a boost for us," said the Cobblers boss.

"He's a very good player to have around the team, he's very solid and dependable.

"He's one of those lads who you know will give you at least seven out of 10 every week and it's all been agreed for his to stay for the rest of the season."

Fellow loanee Danny Swailes now only has two games left on his loan contract from Milton Keynes Dons, although no decision has been made on extending that.

Swailes has started all three games since he made the short trip up the A508 to Sixfields, but is yet to be on the winning side for the club.

Town have Patrick Kanyuka who can cover at centre-half, and Chris McCready resumed training last week after recovering from a hamstring injury picked up at Aldershot.

And with Craig Hinton and Dean Beckwith having returned to fitness, Sampson must now decide whether to keep Swailes on board or to allow him to return to the Dons and free up some of his wage budget in time for the opening of the January transfer window.
